I am listening to Nicolas Lens and particularly enjoying this â âOrrori dellâ Amoreâ. Nick Cave has written an opera entitled âShell Shockâ in collaboration with Lens. Itâs going to be interesting to hear that! It will debut in October this year.

Iâm making my way through Heitor Villa-Lobosâ âBachianas Brasileirasâ â gorgeous full-bodied compositions â all different, all nine suites. The opening movement of Suite No 1 is for an orchestra of only cellos and is fantastic!

My interest in listening to music is different from what I play. I searched the internet way back looking for performances of works by all of the composers in the catalogues that I have and that are online and I found a lot of the music I hammer away at originates outside of the US. Quite a bit of it is not even available here in the US although I know we do carry our share of gifted composers. My attachés are full I have enough to keep me busy till I fall off the perch needless to say you never stop looking because you never know.

Bachiana No 5 by Villa-Lobos. The aria, Cantilena, has been recorded by many sopranos, not least Joan Baez, who pulls it off incredibly well considering her lack of operatic training, and I like the orchestration here as well - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xfTtUxyjOaE

What I do have is the soundtrack from âHilary and Jackieâ. I think the cello Jacqueline du Pré plays in this clip, and maybe in the recordings on the soundtrack, is the Davydov Stradivarius (now in the hands of Yo-Yo Ma. Three hundred years old it is, and he once absentmindedly left it in a taxi cab in NY!!). Her sound is unmistakeable and itâs clear to see why â total immersion. Phenomenal!
