What Are You Listening To? - CRAZY-HORSE - 07-06-2013

ELVIS COSTELLO WITH BURT BACHARACH "painted from memory" cd, 1998, #32 UK, #26 AU, #78 US

yet again Costello bewilders fans with an unexpected "u-turn" with his music(only other artist i know does that cinsistantly is Neil Young), never satisfied within his comfort zone, Costello is always looking for the 'next thing' to broaden his horizons, but unlike Mr.Young, Costello's musings do work, but can take some getting used to!
this one came about because a UK movie maker commissioned both Burt and Elvis to write a song for a movie, the song was "god give me strength" which does appear on this album, anyway, both Elvis and Burt enjoyed working together that they decided to do some more writing together to see what happened...the result, this album!
lots of the usual sugar coated strings, pop melodies and sparse intrumentation that makes a Bacharach song here, along witht he biting, bitter, twisted lyrics that make an Elvis Costello album perfect here also....
this one would have been a big thrill for Elvis to make as he has recorded a few Bacharach songs in his long career and has always claimed Burt was a big influence on him as a child...so everything has come full circle for him i guess!

I had passed over that album not knowing what to expect
seemed too off the wall

What Are You Listening To? - CRAZY-HORSE - 07-06-2013

ALL of Elvis' albums are worth it IMO, some just take a while to appreciate fully, this one and The Juliet Letters took me a while to "get in to"

this one is okay, not dissimilar to other sparse acoustic stuff he has done really, Burt just added a twist of sugar to the process is all....but nothing wrong with it IMO

the linked track pretty well sums up the feel of the album, like that, and youll like the album.

PAUL McCARTNEY "unplugged:the official bootleg" cd,1991. #7 UK, #14 US

after his massive world tour of 1990, Macca headed into the MTV studios to face an audience of some fifty or so fans...
some of those fans taped the show and were selling it on the "www", so Macca ruch released this set to combat the bootleggers, thus, the aptly titled set!
this one was actually recorded totally acoustically with all instruments having their own mic's to pick up the sounds rather than being plugged in, giving a real acoustic session...
included on this one is,according to macca, the first song he ever wrote in "i lost my little girl". elsewhere there are some rare covers in "blue moon of kentucky", "hi heel sneakers","singing the blues" and "be bop a lula" to name a few...
we even see him pull three tracks from his debut solo set "mccartney" also(tracks 8,12 and 17), along with a rare live version of The Beatles "she's a woman"...
even band guitarist Hamish Stuart pulls a couple out of the hat showing his talents as a vocalist on "and i love her" and "aint no sunshine"...
interesting to note the false start at the beginning of "we can work it out" where macca starts the second verse instead of the opening verse at the beginning, but like he says "seeing as its informal, we'll start again"...LOL!
i just feel as though Macca's vocals are quite flat at times which lets this one down a bit, but in the scheme of things where else can you find him singing a lot of these tracks...nowhere i suspect, unless its around the dining table, and i guess i'll never get that privilage, so this will suffice!
also, this album became Macca's best selling album in the US since 1982's superb "tug of war" set....

I mistakenly referred to this as a compilation album in another thread. Turns out Ella had
eight different Songbook albums, where the focus was on a particular writer. Johnny Mercer was
a song writer whose work was featured in many films and broadway shows in the 30's and 40's. An
important enough writer for Ella to honor him with this collection of his songs. Only familiar
with a few of these tracks, most of which have been covered by other artists, most notable
being Frank Sinatra. I don't see where any of these were singles for Ella, but she was actually
on the downslide of her popularity at this point. She hung on for many years though, passing
away in 1996 at the age of 79.

BILLY JOEL "cold spring harbor" cd, 1971

Billy's debut solo set....
i'd almost forgotten how much i loved this one, lots of simple melodies and intelligent lyrics from one of popular music's finest pianist/singer songwriters IMO...
this has everything that makes his albums so special(well, up to "innocent man" anyway, after that he went downhill fast IMO...except "stormfront" which i also love)
a great album from a fine musician.
im too tired to put up links or go into best/worst tracks, just truse mt, i love this one

What Are You Listening To? - Music Head - 03-07-2013

I like the songs on this but seriously, 2.4?
The recording process was screwed up
mastered at the wrong speed or some such bs
raised Billys voice a whole octave
he hated it and severed ties with the man responsible
carry on mate

What Are You Listening To? - CRAZY-HORSE - 03-07-2013

the cd version i have has been remastered at the correct speed etc apparently(according to the liner notes)...i never heard the original vinyl version???
