Thanks for the share, SteveO. That instrument works so well especially on Middle Eastern themes. Not for nothing and not trying to one-up you but somebody has posted a bunch of oboe stuff: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ET0Q41OF...F68CB27B6A

Agree - I have used the oboe (albeit synthesized) on my own middle eastern-themed music as well. It just slots in with that type of groove so easily.

Just came across this guy on SiriusXM. Othello Molineaux. Steel pans may not be the most exotic instrument in jazz but sure comes close --and then there's that elegant name... Sure. there's Andy Narrell but he plays Caribbean music (Caribbean Jazz Project)--Mr. Molineaux takes standards and makes them his own. His recording history (mostly as a sideman) goes back to 1976. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Othello_Molineaux And what he does:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7QKnbNYHJ7M << an earnest, serious artist who radiates joy--quite a trick to pull off
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nVLj8AtdW04 << I sure want to dance with some good woman to this
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9jcHlTewjzc << crap vid but there's not much available
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RJcHM6zRueQ << from '93's It's About Time his only album as leader* Put this CD on and spend the next hour in a beautiful groove
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AX0Q-8jX7YM << Is this guy ever the master of his instrument. Lord have mercy!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HTT1F3wMacA << can't seem to let this guy go...here in a bop song

Just to show Mr. Molineaux isn't the only one workin' the pans in a jazz vein: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LZNV52RaSLM << Need someone in the UK or Caribbean to pick up and expand this theme...More on Mr. Sharpe, a pioneer: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lennox_Sharpe

Sadly for us fans but good for him, Mr. Thielemans has announced and acted upon his retirement. At 92, he's surely entitled but it leaves us with few options on this instrument and nobody of his caliber (IMHO).

Yusef Lateef had a tendency to use traditional instruments like the Xun.

He also regularly used the oboe and bassoon.

Clarinet is not an unusual instrument in jazz (2 of the better swing era bandleaders played it--Artie Shaw and Benny Goodman) but here's 3 modern masters of an unusual variant--the bass clarinet.:
Oran Etkin I'll let his Wiki and Website convince you: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oran_Etkin and http://www.oranetkin.com/ << Be prepared for anything in his musical amalgam but know it's always musical.

Jason Stein http://jasonsteinmusic.com/ Has added his talents to a bunch of "New Jazz" projects and has a few discs on his own. Here's a review of an '09 offering: http://www.allmusic.com/album/three-less...0001955322
