the session musicians--multi-segmented
#1
So these 2 guys meet in a small independent recording studio in LA, and out walks Toto. Whatever you think of their music (and it's surprisingly hip for La musica Chica), they had 17 releases, 35 MM in sales. And did I mention 5 Grammys and in the HoF? All because David Paich (keys, vcl) and Jeff Porcaro blended so well and got on so famously as session musicians (not studio musicians--session folks are hired day-to-day by the producers and studio owners--studio folks have contractural allegiance; session folks don't). Also joining with them were Steve Lukather (gtr) and Steve Porcaro (keys and main writer) {sounds like the Porcaro Mob + helpers, doesn't it? Talented tribe.} Their music scales up beautifully for a capella or orchestral treatments. 3 bigger pieces all in one dunk + a treat:

I am well aware that my street creds are in total disarray for liking Toto--oh well. In fairness, they are a different band on stage and show their chops a bit more. They showed verve, vigor and a bit of imagination. Look for the Live in Amsterdam vid--worthy addition.

Next segment--some session cats who stayed session...but still got a name. Stay tuned.

Now we dive deep in the FunZone. For every 1 tune I present, I get to listen to 5. Yee ha! Wikipedia has a good article on the subject--I'm merely following up on their leads #. General principles: Most session cats were used with other guys* for just a day or a session--no cohesion. Some folks, however, were simpatico enough personally and musically to be a Producer's Pick for any kind of session, and even got inside-industry names. Top-notch musicians who could even bring arrangements/ inventions to something to add to the tasty licks. One such is The Wrecking Crew. Here's the wiki, followed by some tunes (some surprises there): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Wreckin...28music%29

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LRmRBrnQq8o << this clip is my loving gift to all. Jeff Barry could've made a good living as a singer; so glad he wrote songs too. Darlene Love is a force majeure--I don't want to know how Phil Spector could have abused her all those years.
