I kept meaning to reply to this thread, but each time I would read a new post, the time would get away from me, and I kept telling myself I'd come back later and put in my 2 cents.

First, the most wonderful thing about us humans is that we are not all alike, and what might excite one, may not another. The same can be said for music. Isn't it great there is so much out there, that can appeal to everyone's different tastes?

As for Ms. Winehouse, I have to agree with Beachy on this one. I just cannot see (or hear) what all the fuss is about. I don't think she has the "be all and end all" voice. I think she's nothing more then a marketing magnet who has managed to capitalize on a so-so voice, and a lifestyle that the gossip columnist LOVE!

She just ain't worth it!

I agree with this, and also the fact that shes supposed to atleast attempt to be some sort of role model for her younger fan base and shes admittedly smoking crack and doing songs about going to rehab...I dont think she should be awarded with anything

Being talented and a great musician has nothing to do with being a role model. Look at the greats: Janis Joplin, Keith Richards, Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix, even Bob Dylan. They all did drugs very openly, and certainly were not very good role models. Even people such as Miles Davis and Lead Belly dabbled in drugs. Personaly I think it is very stupid to get involved in such horrible things. Those awards aren't given out to people for being a good role model, theyre for being a good musician. Plain and simple. As far as talent goes I think that Amy Winehouse is a little above average as far as vocals go, and very talented as far as songwriting goes. Thats more than I can say of just about any other female artist in today's world.

Another question you should consider: Did freebasing cocaine make Richard Pryor any less funny? I think we can apply the same logic to Amy Winehouse. Its a tragedy she is involved with the stuff she is. But she has a disease and she needs help. That doesn't make her any less talented.

I'm glad that you feel it is stupid to become involved in such things as drugs. It would be interesting to know where you got the information about Leadbelly (one word by the way - not two) "dabbling in drugs". I had never heard of his using anything apart from a 44 to kill a man for which he wound up in jail.
Winehouse is, as far as I'm concerned anyway, a talentless trout - not because she uses drugs of any description but because that is what she is!

I think it's sort of silly to place any responsibility upon musicians other than for their direct effect on others. Accusing an artist of being responsible for someone's death or them doing something illegal unless they actually kill someone or force the person in question to do something illegal, I think, is ridiculous. I don't care what Amy Winehouse does in her spare time, so long as she doesn't deprive someone of their basic human rights in any form or fashion. That said, I also think that she's a shit singer.

Totally agree and can't understand where some people are coming from when they suggest otherwise regarding musicians' habits.

First of all Lead Belly is known as both "Leadbelly" and "Lead Belly." As in the "Lead Belly Foundation" and "Lead Belly: A Life in Pictures." Oh, also, Lead Belly himself spelled it "Lead Belly." And his tombstone says "Lead Belly."

See:
http://www.deltablues.net/lead3full.jpg

You can also read the wikipedia entry on "Lead Belly." Normally I don't use wikipedia as a reference, but I think in this case it is ok, being that I already used his own tombstone first.

My assumption that Lead Belly used drugs was based purely on listening to "Take A Whiff On Me." You may be correct in your assumption that he did not ever try cocaine, but the fact is that neither of us will know for sure. I admit that I should not have used his name in my original post.

Maybe I wasn't clear in trying to communicate my thoughts on Ms. Winehouse. I believe she deserved those awards. But, thats not saying a whole lot. Look at who she was up against. Amy Winehouse is an above average female artist. Not great by any means. I don't even really like to listen to her. But she is four million times more talented than any of the other popular artists these days. I just feel it is of bad taste to judge her for her lifestyle.

This post probably won't be posted for a while because I am new to the forum, so I apologize before hand for the delay.

OK - a couple of things here!
Yes, his name is written as two words on the tombstone however, that doesn't make it correct and I have never seen it written as such more than one or twice in my entire life. It's a litlle like the odd burke who writes me down as 'Beach Head', 'Beachead' and when I tell then that is incorrect they still stare strangely and say, "Are you sure?"
At this point I usually open up a dictionary for them - though not a Webster's as Merriam Webster has managed enough damage to the English language without anybody else helping him.
As to 'Take A Whiff On Me' (a.k.a. Cocaine Habit), this is only attributed to Leadbelly & Alan Lomax when on one of his recordings. It is originally a 'traditional' (read Public Domain) composition for which every bugger and his dog stakes a claim and is very popular among 'Jug Bands'.
And
:puke:'Whinehouse' (intentional) still can't sing! Sorry my friend.

I can't believe someone would go through so much effort to try to say that Leadbelly's name is Lead Belly. lol

This is a scan of a letter written by Lead Belly himself:
Blues LEAD BELLY LEDBETTER - Autograph Ltr Signed

notice the "Lead Belly" at the top

The Lead Belly Foundation, founded "by Tiny Robinson, niece of Huddie Ledbetter to preserve and promote the musical legacy of the “King of the
12-string guitar’" recommends the spelling Lead Belly, because that is how Lead Belly himself spelled it. You can see the foundation's website can be seen here:

Untitled Document

You can email the foundation too like I did if you want and ask if you don't believe me.

The recording companies got it wrong back in the day and it stuck. I spell it with two words because that is how Lead Belly himself did it. I think Lead Belly would know the correct spelling of his own name.
