Is This The Life - NO!!!
#1
I thought I posted this already. But, I can't find it. When I originally posted (I'm pretty sure) there was just a list of "What Are You Listening Too". Since I thought I posted, I've listened to this at least another 15 times.

It blows.

Since I'm a Waters fanatic, I desperately tried to find something to love about it. The absolute best I can say about this drivel is, it's dull musicianship doesn't hit a bad note. Which isn't saying much.

Unique melody is gone. His wonderful background vocals, especially Arnold is gone. Clapton/Beck style guitar solos (or any solos) gone. This album literally sounds like he didn't want to pay professional musicians, so he gave his catalog to this bunch of hacks (they could be pros. But, they sure don't sound it) and said "Hear what we did here? Let's copy that."

Of course his lyrics are just bitching and moaning. If you hate Trump, you'll love the lyrics. There's lines on drones killing innocent old women who are just fixing a meal, yet zero on gays being slaughtered in a nightclub, or a couple who were given a baby shower, and thought the proper way to say thanks was go to the annual Christmas party and slaughter the lousy gift givers. He's never grasped onto the fact, that sometimes war is a necessary evil. It must have been awful to lose his father in the war. But, my God it was WW2. There was no nobler war in which to lose a loved one. Imagine if the world just let Hitler continue...

As I listened over and over, I tried to wonder what the hell he was thinking. All these years, and this is the best he could come with? I don't believe that. There was a great song he did at the end of The Wall shows, that didn't make it onto this album.

I'm hoping the live band brings some life to this crapola. I swear there's one song where the piano plays an off-beat version of the melody Waters is spewing, and it's ONE NOTE.

I am so utterly disappointed. Especially since I've gotten a few really great albums lately.

^^No idea how you managed 15 listens! I barely managed one before scrambling to find an antidote!!

I really like Jonathan Wilson, he’s a great guitarist and has made some good albums, IMHO, so was expecting more from him. He’s also into production and does it well, but wasn’t involved in that side of things here.

Mystifying that the album is generally receiving positive to rave reviews.  Confused

It's the anti Trump sentiment. If it's anti-Trump it has to be applauded. There isn't a song on this that sticks with you. If you try really hard, every accent can be identified from a previous Floyd song.

It's just terrible. I do hope they translate better live.

I had completely forgotten that Waters was touring. I bought tickets for Frozen on Broadway, had to replace all the tires on my car and then remembered about his shows. A week before he started his tri-state shows, I see $250 for a good seat, $100 for the rest. Since I can't stand the new album, I didn't run to the NJ performance a short train ride away. But, before the closing night at LI’s Nassau Coliseum I caved and drove the 60 miles.

Outside the Coliseum Saturday night, a $250 15th row seat could be bought for $40. I didn't want to sit close, since I knew the visuals were going to be massive. $100 upper 200s were $10. I bought a first ring for $20. Excellent seat for the visuals, which were much more impressive than I ever thought. The band was in front of a massive video screen. Think gargantuan iMax. He really doesn’t spare any expense.

Musically he didn’t sing till the third song. If I hated the new album before seeing the show, I hate it even more after. The music and backing vocals that make Waters voice sound so rich on Floyd songs are noticeably absent when he’s singing this tripe. There’s some full show videos on youtube, it’s evident that the songs are insanely weak compared to the Floyd material. He closed the first half with the usual Another Brick in the Wall. It was an OK show at that point. He’s a fine bassist, but I’d have liked to hear his voice a little more. Most of the Floyd songs were sung by the guitarists and BG duo (who were very good, but no PP Arnold).

The second part of the show began with sirens blasting as rigging lowered with red lights attached. It stopped a few feet above the audience and was as long as the Coliseum floor, screens folded out, stacks raised and a small pig appeared. The screens became the Animals cover warehouse. It was truly breath taking to behold, for people on either side. If you were sitting under it ($250 seats) I’d be kind of pissed. It would have to, to a certain extent block your view. Of course you were unable to actually see the screens or what they did. The people directly across who had their entire view obstructed had a single monitor to watch. Those losers (in Waters mind) probably only paid $75 per ticket, who needs a view.

The opening song (I’m pretty sure) was an instrumental that was AWFUL. It was only a few players, while Waters and the rest donned pig masks and drank champagne. As the noise blared, Waters removes the mask and looks into the camera. He mouths “It’s Me” with no audience response. Then he points to himself and mouths “It’s me” and the audience cheers. Then he soaks in the love. This was the first time he demanded adoration. The worst was later when he received some applause and didn’t begin a song to soak it all in. Then he pounded his heart to make the applause louder. When the applause died down, he pounded his heart again. It felt like forever. I was not close to the stage, but I did yell out “start the fucking song” which made the person I bought the ticket from start to howl. It didn’t. Waters soaked in the love and ended with “I feel a lot of love in this room. I know we will overcome”. This of course came after -

The second song of Part 2 was PIGS. It was so bad, I thought it was a new song written directly for Trump, because the screens were filled with childish imagery such as Trump on a fat body. As the camera lowered it stopped and zoomed in on a tiny penis. Another was Trump holding a huge penis in both hands, and as the camera moves in the penis gets smaller and smaller. It was beyond juvenile. It was downright embarrassing. Putin holding a baby with Trump’s face. I watched many people leave the already partially empty Coliseum (Friday night at Stubhub the entire first row center seats were still on sale. Not to mention the hundreds of other tickets). The woman next to me with three children were dead asleep through most of the show. Her husband was the only one awake.

I loved that the multi-millionaire Waters used images of Trump Plaza, Casinos to make the point Trump is a money grubber while playing Money. If ever there a clear moment of hypocrisy... Money grubbers shouldn’t point fingers at money grubbers.

He destroyed Vera Lynn and Bring the Boys Back Home with acoustic versions that lacked anything remotely musical. I knew that would lead to Comfortably Numb which closed the show, and there was no encore.

If this was a person’s first experience at a Waters show, I can fully understand how you’d be dazzled by the visuals. Theoretically it was a beautiful set-list consisting of almost the entire Dark Side album, the standard Wish You Were Here, Wall songs, and Welcome to the Machine. But, the arrangements of these songs were IMO poorly executed. I remember the DSOTM tour years ago and every song was magnificent. This show relied too much on the visual and not enough on the playing. But hey, we shall overcome.

Thank God I only paid $20.
