NEW ALBUM: David Crosby - Sky Trails
#1
DAVID CROSBY ~ Sky Trails

Good grief! David Crosby is not only alive and kicking – he’s produced yet another new album and gone a bit jazzy, á la Steely Dan, particularly on the first track, at any rate. Wonder what he’s putting in his cornflakes??! He has absolutely no problem speaking his mind on any number of subjects e.g. ‘A lot of people look great but they can’t sing’ … well, he’s quite right, and he still can, to a degree, but I’m not convinced by the jazz leanings and I think he comes across infinitely better on the more folk oriented material and where it’s not up to him to carry the whole song. His voice is just not strong enough anymore; pity, as his was one of the greatest harmonising vocal instruments of all time, notwithstanding his many foibles, failings and fights over the years.

I really enjoyed five of the nine tracks on this album, including his pointed “Capitol” and on first listen, the songs are either really gorgeous or not memorable at all – which might change – as usual! Lol!! Many may disagree, but musically speaking I found it nicely done yet not hugely cohesive - nothing wrong with everyone’s contributions and there’s thoughtful inspiration for most of the material – the album just doesn’t come across as ‘whole’, for want of better words, although upon reflection, I suppose there’s no reason it should! I like the cover artwork – production by his son, James Raymond.

The lead track – “She’s got to be Somewhere” … https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S77732a8XJ4

Couldn’t find links to all my favs so far, so going with those that are available … “Sell Me a Diamond” – based on a conversation he overheard about conflict-free diamonds and woven in with the fact that none of us has ever lived in a conflict free time ….. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TClV7quWFYc

... and the title track ...

Had a listen to the title track - love it. Reminds me a lot of another album I have by Art Garfunkel titled 'Everything Waits To Be Noticed' You might give that one a try Ruby.

Here's a few - quality is a bit crap but it will give you some idea.

Just do it!  Big Grin
I've listened to the Stills/Collins new album too but it's been taken off the www for now it would seem.
Stills' voice is broken but Judy's is still so sweet and his guitar is sooo good. They make a very comfortable pair. I liked it a lot.

Thanks Jerome. I will listen to the album - loved “Perfect Moment” and "The Kid".
I think I’ve really only heard his much earlier stuff.

I think Croz was better than Lighthouse – but kudos to him for keeping on keeping on!

Art's music is the perfect background for rainy Sunday afternoons when you just want to switch off the world outside. And we have an awful lot of rainy Sunday afternoons in Ireland and today is no exception so I might just dig out some of his solo stuff today. 'Watermark' is another favourite of mine and the one mentioned in the thread above. Saw him live in Dublin's Vicar Street venue some years back. Crap venue, great concert. And he's not nearly as laid back as you might think. He is VERY opinionated and does not like any disturbances while he is performing.

ok, listened to the album....
it would certainly get a passing grade on a first up listen, I guess somewhere between "croz" and "lighthouse" would be appropriate
