Your Musical Quote of the Day
#61
David Gray on Tim Buckley … "He's like a magical spirit, plugged into something far out. ‘Earth Is Broken’ on his live album Dream Letter is as mysterious a piece of music as you will ever hear, but it’s just him and a 12-string guitar that is slightly out of tune. That shows you how far you can travel with nothing at all."

Buckley was a mere 21 years old, didn’t have his regular supporting musicians with him due to a restricted budget so was playing with unknown (to him) quantities, and yet he held that picky London audience in thrall. The whole concert was recorded with no cuts and no edits – it has an incredible quality of sound and atmosphere - weird to think it was made just shy of half a century ago!

The original article from which that quote was borrowed - http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/music...leeve.html

And the track David Gray speaks of ...

Going through a pile of John Denver records and noticed that he quotes Joe Henry here and there. Henry, who is still around and was a great friend to Denver, and, I suspect, mentor, co-wrote a good few songs with him and has written for other musos, as well as having published essays and a book.

This is on the back of the Spirit album cover ...

And the spirit fills the darkness of the heavens
It fills the endless yearning of the soul
It lives within a star too far to dream of
It lives within each part and is the whole
It's the fire and the wings that fly us home

-Joe Henry

It's the last verse of "The Wings That Fly Us Home" ...
