CALEXICO  "the thread that keeps us"

Spotify listen:

tenth album from this band from Arizona....
hadn't previously heard of them...
basically a duo who enlist where necessary....
twenty two tracks on here, but still only just cracks the hour duration mark....
lots of styles on this one from Americana through to Latino (on one track)...
several short instrumental pieces break up the album beautifully, even myself and MH
could put up with them as they only break the minute mark...
hearing sounds reminiscent to Neil Finn on this one, which I happen to hear a lot lately on
new album I listen to, maybe the modern crop were influenced by him, or he was simply years
ahead of his time with some sounds ("intriguer" namely...)....
a very very good album, well worth a listen if you get the chance MD peeps...

one of the little instrumentals:  "unconditional waltz"  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_IDChov6W0c  (audio)

one of the Americana tracks: "the town and miss Lorraine"  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WnQpbOa0T0M (live)

the latino track:  "Flores y Tamales"   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KWluXbWpbVw   (audio)

^Glad you've picked up on them CH. I haven’t got to this album yet - tried to listen to the other day but only managed a couple of tracks before being interrupted and losing focus. It sounded as though it would be more mainstream than some of their other stuff, but from what you are saying, that might just be the first couple of tracks. I've been listening to Calexico since who knows when – try Carried to Dust andThe Black Light – both very good, IMHO - some of the later ones are a bit hit and miss. They have a great ethos - come across as sincere, nice human beings, and I like their Tex-Mex sounds, not to mention their thinking person’s lyrics. Someone coined the phrase ‘desert noir’ which works for me! I’ve rambled on about them here and there on the forum.

At the risk of hi-jacking your thread – this track is from The Black Light – performed here with Greek band Takim. Fantastic instruments … love it!

^Lol – quite possibly too much! Thanks for listening and feeding back. Ok – I’ve listened to the new album now. It’s a lot more varied than the early stuff and it’s not bad at all, but there is much less of their distinctive sound. I like ‘world’ music and fusions thereof so it’s that indie mariachi sound that holds appeal for me, and what set them apart in the first place.

Anyway – it's not completely gone and I (reluctantly) suppose change is good! We hear more of Joey Burns’ range than is usual - he has a kind of quiet vocal style but seems to be projecting a bit more on this. He can certainly extend his reach when he cares to. I like the instrumental interludes, was a bit taken aback by the Talking Heads sound of “Another Space” (immediately made me think of “Houses in Motion”) and found some of the tracks a bit fuzzy round the edges; then again, that looseness is another of their characteristics and there’s more to like than not.

For interest – just because I like it - their version of “All the Pretty Horses” - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WyX4xeEU_30
