What Are You Listening To?

Philadelphia soundtrack is good. I admit I've never actually seen the movie but only bought it for a Neil Young song I hadn't heard yet! 'Streets Of Philadelphia' by Springsteen is a great tune.

i suggest strongly that you do see the movie at some point, Springsteen's SOP song has a whole new feel to it once youve seen the movie.

Haven't been to this thread in a while. This is a soundtrack, to a movie I do not think I've seen. Anybody know if it's any good? This album actually scores pretty high, considering it's half instrumental, but even those are quite good. Only one track I didn't like. The standout has to be Memphis. That one get's me moving. Was hoping for a live clip for that, but not to be. I can close my eyes and picture Joe rockin' out to this. Overall, the album is very similar to Night & Day. If you liked that, you should like this. Some called Night & Day his sellout album. If that was true, give me more sellouts. That was superb. Oh wait, not reviewing that album here. Mike's Murder is ok. Jazzy feel on most of the album. Just read where most of this music was not even used in the film. Due to release delays they had another film score and used music from both Joe Jackson and John Barry. Wonder how Joe felt about that. The instrumental of Breakdown (my worst track) received a grammy nomination. The album went to #64 here and the single of Memphis to a whopping #85.

I LIKE THIS ALBUM

Worst Track - Breakdown

Best Track - Memphis

Memphis - Where the hell is Memphis?
Memphis - Where the hell is Memphis?
I got to get away, study my geography
I'm just a shadow of the boy I used to be
I used to see the light, now it's all a mystery
I used to feel the beat, now I feel a million miles from...
Memphis - Where the hell is Memphis?
Memphis - Where the hell is Memphis?
I used dirty words never too excessively
But saying "rock&roll" never seemed so bad to me
I dare said it in hip and happy company
I was in and out in a second on my way to...
Memphis - Where the hell is Memphis?
Memphis - Where the hell is Memphis?
Memphis, so where the hell is Memphis?
I had a one-way ticket and a little radio
I turned it on, heard the sound from twenty years ago
Somebody smiled and said, that's the only way to go
He died at twenty-one, now nobody's innocent in...
Memphis - Where the hell is Memphis?
Memphis - Where the hell is Memphis?
Somebody turned around, said, I got to disagree
He wrote that sort of turn people out to anarchy
He made them think about Marlon Brando on TV
I guess they still went down against anything they got in...
Memphis - Where the hell is Memphis?
Memphis - Where the hell is Memphis?
I met a wise old man, he had longer hair than me
He said, Memphis is nothing like it used to be
A hundred dead guitarists lying in the cemetry
I felt a sudden chill, now I'm not so sure about...
Memphis - Where the hell is Memphis?
Memphis - Where the hell is Memphis?
I'm on a lonesome train on a lonesome track
I think I'll jump right off, head for home, double back
And though I'm better now I know that no-one knows the facts
I'm gonna start again, forget I ever heard about...

Wow, in this forum twice in one week. If the music here were not from films, I guess she would be in jazz. This is probably a very brief summary of the best of her film work, spanning from 1937 up through 1950. The classic we all know is also my fav. Still think The Wizard Of Oz has to be one of the greatest family films ever made. And the beautiful Over The Rainbow is the musical highlight. The speaking part of the song in #2 is just adorable. Not being familiar with all of her film work, I'm assuming this is the best. Two other standouts for me with nothing bad. All of these versions are from the actual films, so I'm sure they are lacking in impact without the movie clip. I have included those when available. A great actress and singer. If only she hadn't spawned Liza.

Best Track - Over The Rainbow

Somewhere, over the rainbow, way up high.
There's a land that I heard of
Once in a lullaby.
Somewhere, over the rainbow, skies are blue.
And the dreams that you dare to dream
Really do come true.
Someday I'll wish upon a star and
wake up where the clouds are far
Behind me.
Where troubles melt like lemon drops,
Away above the chimney tops.
That's where you'll find me.
Somewhere, over the rainbow, bluebirds fly.
Birds fly over the rainbow,
Why then - oh, why can't I?
If happy little bluebirds fly beyond the rainbow,
Why, oh, why can't I?

Soundtracks are rare in my collection, but aside from the sleeve, the Batdance tune, and a few discrete dialog snippets, there's not much to tie this to the movie.

Pretty standard Prince Funk-Rock stuff, which means it's good.

Sheena Easton guests on one track, and I still struggle to take her seriously having witnessed her initial dire Pop career in the UK. Ah well...

Allmusic 2+/5 stars.

Strange what will catch on with the public. This soundtrack to the film did surprisingly well, outgrossing the film. Think I tried to watch the film once, but couldn't make it through it. It's about a bird for christs sake. No dialogue. Just a friggin bird going through his daily routine. Get up, fly around, go fishin'. I did read the book that the film was adapted from. If you can call it a book. Think it took about a half hour to read. Bird was outcast by the flock and sets out to determine his possibilities at the art of flying. Now before you all go thinking I'm insensitive to the plight of the bird, quite the contrary. Gotta be a bummer, stranded at sea, foraging for food, struggling for survival. Just seems kind of presumptious for humans to pretend to know what animals are thinking. I mean what's next, Jeremy Nottingham Inchworm? Neil won a Grammy and a Golden Globe for his efforts. An excellent song on the album, of Be, which made it to #34 on the charts, with the album at an amazing #2. Only a few songs with any vocals and those are repeated, to fill it up I guess.

I DO NOT LIKE THIS ALBUM

Worst Track - Flight Of The Gull

Best Track - Be

Lost
On a painted sky
Where the clouds are hung
For the poet's eye
You may find him
If you may find him

There
On a distant shore
By the wings of dreams
Through an open door
You may know him
If you may

Be
As a page that aches for a word
Which speaks on a theme that is timeless
And the one God will make for your day
Sing
As a song in search of a voice that is silent
And the Sun God will make for your way

And we dance
To a whispered voice
Overheard by the soul
Undertook by the heart
And you may know it
If you may know it

While the sand
Would become the stone
Which begat the spark
Turned to living bone
Holy, Holy
Sanctus, sanctus

Be
As a page that aches for a word
Which speaks on a theme that is timeless
And the one God will make for your day
Sing
As a song in search of a voice that is silent
And the one God will make for your way
