I think "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" made them popular and more known outside the USA.

I don't really agree on your thoughts - I did Watch their Concert in Stockholm in early 90's and at that time it was 'Basket case' that was their major break through...
But in one way you may be right, after some years after Dookie album I didn't hear much from them until the Boulevard were played more on the radio...

Another great thing one experience every now and then is when you listen a lot to a Group and all of a sudden discover one or a couple of great songs you seem to have missed...
Drama Queen & Oh love are two such songs I discovered recently...

The whole American Idiot phenomenon made them more popular among younger generation. Songs like Wake Me Up When September Ends, Holiday, American Idiot and Boulevard of Broken Dreams introduced me to the band.
