NEIL YOUNG "chrome dreams II" 2007. #11 US, #14 UK, #37 Aust.

here, we have the third truly great Neil young album in a row since around 1977ish.
you may be wondering why its called "chrome dreams II" when there isnt a "chrome dreams" album, well the original "Chrome Dreams" was shelved by Young in the late 1970s and he occasionally pick tracks off it for various albums over the following decades, also he always liked the title and finally got round to using it here.
what makes this album greater than most is not only the variation of styles from ballads, folk, gospel tinged tracks,CH style rockers and lengthy guitar driven tracks, but the fact that every one of them sounds fresh and new, not simply rehashing old tunes and themes, at eighteen minutes long "ordinary people" is a Young rock symphony with plenty of guitar solos and well thought out verses.
again, not a dud track in view and almost a perfect Young album showing at his age that he can be still relevant and a force in the 'noughties'.

I LOVE THIS ALBUM

NEIL YOUNG "dreamin' man "92, 2009. #193 US.

this one is a live recording of Neil and his acoustic guitar on his solo tour of the US in 1992 to promote his "Harvest Moon" album.
its a pleasant enough album to hear the entire HM album live, it is not essential NY listening, moreso a filler to complete your collection.

NEIL YOUNG "fork in the road" 2009. #19 US, #22 UK, #46 AU.

not a real good album this one, and a bit of a letdown after three superb studio albums before this one.
its a concept album based around his own vehicle...yeh i know....rivitting stuff!!!! at the time he was putting a lot of money into developing environmentally friendly fuel for cars with a mechanic friend of his, trying to develop new engines and electric driven vehicles, he even drove his Lincoln car with newly developed bio-fuel to the steps of Congress to show the US politions that there are options in vehicle manufacturing that they could try to support.
there's nothing great by Young's standards on this one, just eight reasonable tracks and two duds, but still not his worst album by any means.

NEIL YOUNG "le noise" 2010, #14 US, #18 UK, #42 AU.

yeh i know....i said i loved this when it was first released...and i genuinely did!...and im not afraid to put up my hand and admit that i was wrong with what i thought!
i loved the Daniel Lanois sonics and vocal loops that gave Young a distinctive new sound as he entered another decade of making music.
and that i what i love about Neil young...his willingness to chop and change sounds and ideas at the drop of a hat ie: avoiding his country/folk comfort zone that brought him so much success early in his career....sometimes it works wonderfully, other times it doesnt work and i think "what the hell is he doing?"...and thats how i feel about this one now!
although there is nothing wrong with the majority of the lyrics and the melodies, the music is way too distorted and contorted for even what i'd expect for Sonic Youth in their heyday, sure there are some good old fashioned chord crunches aka Crazy Horse style, but overall its a miss-match of a great artist and a shit producer trying to instill too much of himself into the songs.
the only real great Young song on here is "hitchhiker" which is autobiographical in nature highlighting his original journey from Toronto back in the day through to the current day with wife Peggi and kids, there are three other goodish songs on here and four complete duds, including "rumblin'" which is quite possible the worst song he has ever released...if i could give this track "0" instead of the minimum "*" it would surely qualify.
Neil Young also recieved his first Grammy Award for "best rock song" for "angry world" at this years Grammy's.

NEIL YOUNG & THE INTERNATIONAL HARVESTERS "a treasure" 2011.

Volume 9 of Neil Young's long-delayed, suddenly prodigious Archives series, A Treasure chronicles Neil’s 1984-1985 tour with the International Harvesters, a crackerjack assemblage of country pros featuring guitarist Ben Keith, pianist Hargus “Pig” Robbins, fiddler Rufus Thibodeaux, and Spooner Oldham. This is one of Young's famous left turns, as he abandoned the tightly wound electro of Trans and the hipster rockabilly of Everybody’s Rockin’ for a trip back to the country, cutting Old Ways then hitting the road with the International Harvesters. Old Ways was a little stilted but the same can’t be said of A Treasure: this is vivid and alive, pulsating with a palpable joy. Their energy boosts the Old Ways material, giving it welcome blood and muscle, but A Treasure runs far broader than that one album. Young overhauls two cuts from Re*Ac*Tor, turning “Motor City” and “Southern Pacific” into a honky tonk stomp and a chugging country ballad, respectively, reworks Buffalo Springfield's “Flying on the Ground Is Wrong,” covers Joe London's country chestnut “It Might Have Been” and, most significantly for the hardcore, there are five unreleased Young originals here: a sweetly rambling ode to his daughter “Amber Jean,” an excellent slice of Texan honky tonk with “Let Your Fingers Do the Walking,” the rowdy barroom blues of “Soul of a Woman,” the working man protest of “Nothing Is Perfect,” and Crazy Horse stomp “Grey Riders.” The unheard tunes are all first-rate, but what’s really notable about A Treasure is that it offers a compelling document of how good the International Harvesters were and, in turn, makes sense of a somewhat murky period for Neil Young.

NEIL YOUNG & CRAZY HORSE "americana" 2012 #2 CAN, #4 US, #34 AU, #16 UK

Neil's thirty-second studio album(not counting CSNY,Stills/Young,Buffalo Springfield and movie soundtracks)....
as usual, just when fans thought The Horse would never reform, Young turns 180 degrees and reforms the guys once again....
this time round we see him recording a collection of of folk songs and protest songs dating back to the mid 1800s....
Young picked songs that he thought were relevant to the state of affairs of the US in the 2000s...
many folk songs have alternate verses when recorded by different people but on this occasion Young sticks to the earliest known original lyrics here...
now....
the pitfalls of this one are many(but that make it less enjoyable)....
little two or three minute songs have on more than occasion been blown out here up to five and six minutes to suit the grungy/garage band/jamming style of Crazy Horse which means there is a lot of repetition happening here...
they become less like folk songs with the sound of distortion and guitar crunches and more like throwaway/discarded demos or warm up songs from decades ago...
but overall, it is, good to hear the Horse once again, even if the album is more for novlety value and the self-indulgent force that is Neil Young....
probably not an album for anyone but a Crazy Horse fan(and i am one of those), but it is nice to hear him sing things like "wayfarin' stranger" and "this land is your land", but not to hear him sing "God save the queen"....
again, i do like most of the tracks here on offer, but unfortunately they get boring once the the long overblown repeatativeness creeps in,thus these ones do not score well for that reason!
