What Are You Listening To?

RYAN ADAMS  "1989"  cd,  2015:

soft rocker Ryan's fifteenth studio set...
I own a couple of others, good artist....
this one is a song for song cover of Taylor Swift's "1989"...
tracks are done in the Ryan Adams style and at least
half the album is unrecognisable against the Taylor tracks...
it takes balls to cover a major artist's songs let alone an entire album,
and in this case an album that  is still riding high in the charts!...
a pretty good album IMO...

from the album, Ryan's cover of "shake it off" which is one of the tracks that sounds nothing like the original,
and good to see Taylor is such a good sport by lipsyncing  to Ryan's vocals in the video:

RAG 'N' BONE MAN  "HUMAN"  CD, 2017:

heard the lead off single "human" at the end of 2016, loved it...
actually thought it was a black dude, because he had 'soul' ,gospel' and 'feel' in his vocals...
watched the video....big white guy from the outskirts of London...WTF!...
bought the album as it was released, has the same atmospheric qualities of that single...
the vocals are strong, confident, yet vunerble and haunting all at the same time time...
a good solid album that takes time to grow on you and not an instant like, like the title track...
album, top10 just about everywhere as was "human", the single, except for the US where
the album peaked at #117 and the single at #74....stupid Americans!

from the album, a superb live version of the title track:

SUZANNE VEGA  "retrospective"  cd,  2003:

own several of her singles from back in the day but never got round to her albums for some reason...
21 tracks on this compilation....
almost all are brilliant IMO....
love her almost off beat vocals...
no, not sure if off beat is the correct word but "aural orgasm" is....
superb writer, superb storyteller, sublime artist...
brilliant stuff...
not sure which track to pick as y favourite but I'll go with this one, this time round:

MICHAEL KIWANUKA " love and hate"  cd, 2016:

UK 'soul man'....
second album....
the son of refugees who fled the Idi Amin regime in Uganda...
smooth vocals like bill withers, Terry Callier and Randy Newman...
on occasion has the raspy vocals of Otis or Wilson....
music flits between pseudo funk, sixties soul and the soul of the seventies...
intelligent thoughtful lyrics...
songs have that feature of sounding like an old friend upon first listen...
its warm, its comforting and inviting...
a great find for us courtesy of ruby, thanks girl!

from the album, the song that ultimately got me to buy it initially and by coincidence, it happens
to be the first single lifted from it:

a superb clip from the even more superb Jools Holland show...

FOY VANCE  "the wild swan"  cd,  2016

Irishman....
44 years of age, released his first set in 2007, this is his third album....
signed to Ed Sheeran's label for this one...
album produced by Elton John....
music is similar in vein to fellow Irishman Van Morrison...
hints of Springsteen in a couple of the slower folkier tracks also...
a classy affair,no-actually, a VERY classy affair...
pretty sure MH, Jerome and Ruby would appreciate this one if they heard it, so why not people,
give the full album a listen, you wont be disappointed!

if this one doesn't get you feeling upbeat or feeling good I cant help you...

BOBBY VINTON  "roses are red"  vinyl,  1962

pop idol Vinton's third album...
damn, the guy is still alive, pushing 83 this year...
twelve tracks on here, ten are covers, "roses are red" was written for him and "mr.lonely" was written by him,
both the originals hit the top spot on the US charts as singles...
album is ok, but he doesn't really add anything to the covers IMO...
love his almost angelic/soft as velvet (blue velvet) vocals though...

from the album, the title track:

JOHNNY MATHIS  "johnny's greatest hits"  vinyl,  1977

originally released in 1958 in mono sound but this is the reissued stereo one...
contains all his earliest hits...
at one point this album spent more weeks on the US chart than any other (490 in total)
until it was eventually beaten in 1983 by Dark Side Of The Moon...
silky smooth vocals throughout...if "mr.cool" was an apt nickname for anyone it would surely be warranted
for Mr Mathis...
a superb twelve track vinyl album, but I should really get a decent compilation at some point!

Yes, David Bowie's cover of this one is the best version of this song ever, but this is the original from 1957:
