What Are You Listening To?

KEITH URBAN "keith urban II"  cd,  1999

the third one of six I have borrowed from a work colleague...
it also happens to be Keith's third album also...
its similar to Taylor's early albums in that its mainly ballads with a three, maybe four
country tunes thrown in, and like Taylor the experts call him country...
over the three albums ive listened to there are less than ten songs I would call 'country',
and this has always been my problem with Urban and his music..
now ive got the BS off my chest its time to move on...
a good solid album of ballads, love songs and the occasional hint of country to break
up the Easy Listening stuff...

I LIKE THIS ALBUM

favourite tune, and another great live performance

KEITH URBAN  "keith urban"  cd,  1991

Keith's debut set...
peaked at #98 in Australia, did not chart in his homeland of New Zealand...
a few country tinged tunes on here but mostly Easy Listening...
one cover, Arms Of Mary..., love the original and Keith does a pretty cool version also...
ive been trying to pick a 'sounds like' whilst listening to this one and for the most part
ive narrowed the sound down to Air Supply...
that's not a bad thing they were a decent duo back in the day...
all up nothing I don't like, plenty I do like and a couple I love which means
I LIKE THIS ALBUM

favourite track was written by Aussie music legend Paul Kelly,
Paul covered it himself in 1992 on his "comedy" album: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q2Dc86nSUWU (audio)

NICK LOWE & HIS COWBOY OUTFIT "the rose of England"  vinyl, 1985:

Nick's sixth studio album of fourteen...
only one I own, plus a 49 track compilation...
typical rockabilly, soft rock sounds of Rockpile and cohort Dave Edmunds solo sounds...
the only single released was "I knew the bride" which only charted in Australia..
the album charted in Australia (#29) and US (#119) but nowhere else...
nine originals, three covers including a cover of my favourite Elvis Costello song
"indoor fireworks", love his version also...
love just about everything on the album but best track for me is the title track:

PRETENDERS "last of the independents" cd,  1994:

the band's sixth, my fifth and last...
not sure why I actually stopped but looking at the release date
im assuming that it could only be Britpop, as I was all consumed by
those British bands then...
anyway,
more of those lovely soft, slow ballads on here than the alt rock/pseudo punk
songs than previous albums...
love just about every track on here...
when I checked on Wiki I found that my favourite track was actually released as a single
and I had no idea at the time...
and as usual theres a cover...Dylan's "Forever Young" which is pretty good...
I LOVE THIS ALBUM

Such gorgeous sounds - guitarist Dominic Miller …

STYLE COUNCIL "café bleu" vinyl/cd 1984:

the band's debut album...
an eclectic collection of jazz, big band, blues, folk, pop, blue eyed soul
rap, funk and classical...
Weller did not sing vocals on all tracks and neither did he contribute guitar
to many neither but he wrote all tracks...
half the album is also instrumental, all of which confused and alienated
Weller's hard core Jam fans...
a good solid collection of songs that works very well despite its eclectic
nature...
probably in hindsight, my favourite album of his 40+ year career to date...

DOMINIC MILLER – Silent Light

This album is Miller’s first on the ECM label. Different to his latest release in that it’s just him on acoustic guitar with occasional percussion courtesy of Miles Bould. I like the hush and breath of it – reminds of Pat Metheny’s One Quiet Night. Lots of room between the notes – it’s like fine dining for ears – beautifully balanced and executed - superb. I think I prefer this to Absinthe.

All the tracks from the album - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AKIu_YaR...Ax02vD5LCg

Already posted the gorgeous “Water” so here is “What You Didn’t Say” – so good -  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AKIu_YaRfj8

And “Urban Waltz” –

ADELE "21"  cd,  2011:

second of three albums...
"easy listening/soft rock" seems like a good place to put this...
lots of thumping catchy tunes on here, some lovely ballads also...
mostly dealing with unrequited/lost love....
album took home a swag of awards over the following two years and rightfully so...
sold in excess of 30 million copies and still in the top 50 charts in AU and UK to this day...
superb album, and dare I say it, one of the greatest albums of all time?!
I LOVE THIS ALBUM

instead of the well known hit I thought I would pick this one
on this occasion:

Fabulous album. A real fusion - somehow he manages to crossover a various genres resulting in some super cool funky sounds. Impeccably done IMHO. Great bass, excellent vocals and plenty other good things!

The opener - "Song of Hope" - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R84GNvcwh5w

The earworm - "Motherless Child" - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=49FrhujDRk8

And the torch song, which I love -

Song Of Hope and Emptiness were simply brilliant Ruby, thanks...
wasn't overly keen on the Motherless Child track though
