What Are You Listening To?

SAM COOKE  "hits!" cd,  2009:

sorry, no cover art work so I thought a pic of Mr Cooke would do....
twenty one tracks, all singles...
they didn't call him "mr.soul" for nothing, he had the groove baby!....
superb r+b vocalist, great entertainer but not a nice person in real life, and
his bizarre death is one of the enduring mysteries of the rock era...
love just about every track on this set and the ones I don't love are pretty darn good also...

I had to pick a track to post and this one came out randomly:

RUN DMC  "its like this: the best of" cd,  2009:

double disc, thirty six tracks....
could have been whittled down to a single disc IMO...
anyway,
this is original rap from the 1980s/90s...
before all the foul mouthed gangsters destroyed the genre...
in thirty six tracks there is not one ho/niggaz/blunts/b!tches etc etc...
a breath of fresh air even if they all sound the same...
best track for me is the collaboration with Aerosmith....

Mesmerising performance - you can see the toll it's taking on her, but she comes through regardless - incredible stuff. https://youtu.be/ardglr9MVVQ

NESSA MORGAN  "sex and poverty"  cd, 2004

R&B/Soul....
New Zealand Maori....
debut set...
hearing Lauren Hill and Mary J Blige throughout this one..
a few F-Bombs thrown in for good measure where needed and certainly not overused...
a good solid album...
appears she only released two albums, not sure why because she is a good artist!

from the album, the lead off single:

MELISSA ETHERIDGE "Memphis rock and soul"  cd,  2016:

Melissa's fourteenth and most recent album...
only one I own for some strange unknown reason?....
a covers set of old Stax Records soul/R+B tunes...
her raspy throaty vocals suit these songs...
has an authentic feel to it...
not a great album but a good listen nonetheless...

I wasn't sure which track to post but I watched and liked her live version of this one:

His true talent can be observed when he is being candid in my opinion. Check this medley out: Sam Cooke Medley

I read somewhere that he was pushed to sound like Bobby Darin on his commercial songs.

ARETHA FRANKLIN "the queen of soul"  cd, 2004:

a four disk set, almost a hundred tracks...
all from the "atlantic" label classic years...
listened to Disk number one which covers the period 67-68...
twenty-five tracks on this one...
most pop artists struggle to have a ten classic songs in a career,
Aretha manages that and some on this disk alone....
a superb collection of songs, all her "A" and "B" sides and album tracks to boot...
superb stuff, this one scores a very healthy 2.4 love rating..
impossible for me to pick one solitary track as my favourite one so i'll post the one that
first came to mind when I heard the news she died a few weeks ago:

EMINEM "encore" cd, 2004:

Em's fifth studio set...
a let down after the previous three (Slim Shady lp, Marshall Mathers lp. Eminem Show)…
still sold 21 million copies worldwide though...
looking back, this was the start of his prescription drug addictions as things were changing
in his songs like stupid accents, dumb stuff like belching and farting in places also...
basically, the first half of the album is very good, then it tapers off in the second half...
songs are about his childhood, mom, ex-wife Kim, daughter Hailey, humorous digs at
his contemporaries, even a touch of political satire where he takes aim at George W Bush...
several skits on here also...
album rates slightly better than the last time I posted it in 2012, maybe that is an indicator at
how bad the 'rap game' has got in the last few years..

I LIKE THIS ALBUM

worst song: big weenie
best track: like toy soldiers

tracks:

…...curtains up (SKIT)
1....evil deeds **
2....never enough ***
3....yellow brick road **
4....like toy soldiers ***
