Pedro Depestre Gonzales aka Pedro Depestre died on 08 April 2001, in Basel, Switzerland. He collapsed on stage after what was said to be a âtypically vibrantâ violin solo, and despite a doctor in the audience rushing to his aid, he was not able to be resuscitated.
Maestro Depestre started performing with Orquestra Aragón in Cuba at the age of 13. His father too, was a master violinist. Pedro Depestre was a member of the Buena Vista Social Club, although he declined to tour with them in the late 90âs, preferring to remain in Havana where he had a huge following. He did agree to tour with another Cuban led outfit though, hence the trip to Basel.

June Pointer died on 11 April 2006 at the age of 52, from cancer. She was the youngest of the three Pointer Sisters.
The trio received nine Grammy nominations, winning three, as well as winning three AMAâs - they generated a steady string of hit singles in the early to mid-eighties. When June died, her sister Ruthâs daughter replaced her in the group and so they continue as a different line-up, with a granddaughter now joining too. This was from Juneâs days â
