Born on this day ... - Inna Selez - 01-07-2016 Debbie Harry (born July 1, 1945) is an American singer-songwriter and actress, best known as the lead singer of the new wave and punk rock band Blondie. She recorded several worldwide number one singles with Blondie during the 1970s and 1980s. Sometimes considered the first rapper to chart at number one in the United States due to her work on "Rapture". Her acting career spans over 60 film roles and numerous television appearances. He has done quite a bit of jingle writing and scoring of TV programmes, as well as one or two other fully fledged musical projects, including Spartacus (which IMHO was abysmal), however, his Jeff Wayneâs Musical Version of the War of the Worlds is a tour de force and remains one of my favourite things ⦠An excerpt other than âForever Autumnâ ... with Phil Lynott ⦠ Born on this day ... - Ruby - 04-07-2016 Bill Withers was born on this day in 1938, in Slab Fork, West Virginia, USA. He is responsible for some really well known songs and a massively influential contribution to the music biz, despite having had a relatively short dalliance with said industry (and I use that word advisedly), whose values he disliked intensely. He has been the recipient of four Grammyâs, among other awards. His studios albums were recorded between 1971 and 1985, which is when he officially retired. He is the author of such staples as âAinât No Sunshineâ, âGrandmaâs Handsâ and âLean on Meâ â hereâs the latter ⦠ Born on this day ... - Inna Selez - 08-07-2016 George "Corpsegrinder" Fisher was born July 8, 1969 is an american extreme metal vocalist of "Cannibal Corpse" death metal band and melodic death metal band "Paths of Possession". Born on this day ... - Ruby - 19-07-2016 Zolani Mahola was born on this day in 1981, in Bhisho, Eastern Cape, South Africa. She is the lead singer of SA band, Freshlyground and has become something of a national icon. She has a strong presence (studied drama at university) and a fantastic voice and has appeared with several well-known international artists on their tours here - Robbie Williams, for example, and Shakira. Freshlyground comprises seven members from across SA and Zimbabwe and they play an eclectic blend of afropop, jazz, kwela and indie rock. Ultimately, they are not always my thing, but they are good musicians and they have an infectious, upbeat energy. This is âPot Bellyâ from MaâCheri - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4XPl6Pb8K4I From Nomvula â maybe their most recognisable song â itâs fun â¦. âDoo Be Dooâ - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kLuSyqMlm_U And the power ballad âIâd Likeâ, also from Nomvula ⦠ Born on this day ... - Ruby - 20-07-2016 Happy Birthday to John Charles Lodge, who was born on this day in 1945, in Birmingham, England. He is, of course, a longstanding and integral member of the Moody Blues. Prolific songwriter and joint lead vocalist for the band, heâs been the recipient of a few awards and is regarded as an extremely influential bassist. The band as a whole has been hugely influential and it remains a mystery that they still have not been inducted into the R&R HoF! In addition to music, and a love of cars and golf, Lodge has managed to produce a trophy winning chardonnay (take that R&R HoF, lol!). Aptly, he wrote âSend Me No Wineâ from On the Threshold of a Dream. He has made two solo albums, Natural Avenue and the annoyingly titled 10,000 Light Years Ago, and one with Justin Hayward, titled Blue Jays, as well as having produced for, and collaborated on releases of fellow band members and other artists. This is one of his, from Blue Jays ⦠ Born on this day ... - Inna Selez - 22-07-2016 Selena Marie Gomez was born July 22, 1992 is an American actress and singer. She released 3 albums with band the Scene and 2 solo albums. As an actor took a participation in 22 films and 19 roles on TV shows. Gomez is currently working on her third studio album. Here is the latest video clip. Born on this day ... - Ruby - 22-07-2016 Rick Davies was born on this day in 1944, in Swindon, Wiltshire, England. He founded a band initially named Daddy, recruiting Roger Hodgson and two more, but changed the name to Supertramp shortly after their first gig. He has been the only continuous member throughout their history, which, unfortunately, has entered a period of indefinite hiatus as Davies is ill with multiple myeloma, which is utterly crappy. From childhood, itâs clear that he was Indelibly Stamped as a musical genius and amazingly, is entirely self-taught. He is a real wiz on the keys and has always composed, written and sung. While there are similar elements to be heard throughout both key individualsâ âsoloâ work, Davies seems to have always been inclined towards a less commercial, more jazzy sound than Hodgson, so when they went their separate ways, (which was so traumatic for some of us that it almost felt like the Crime of the Century) that is the direction in which Davies led the band. Crisis? What Crisis? you might ask â but the thing is, that Even in the Quietest Moments, they could be depended on to produce material the likes of which is seldom heard today. I expect that those enjoying Breakfast in America wouldnât want to hear any Famous Last Words, and probably donât embrace the likes of the cold war oriented Brother Where You Bound; although now supposedly Free as a Bird, Some Things Never Change, which personally, I find quite entertaining listening, however not to the exclusion of the earlier incarnation of the band, in its prime, before it all fizzled out in Slow Motion. (Ok â thatâs pretty bad. Lol! Seemed like a good idea at the time. :eek ![]() Repetetive, no doubt, but IMHO Crime of the Century is one of the most superb albums ever put together. âBloody Well Rightâ you might say, which happens to be RD's own. One of my favourites â if only for the key change ⦠from C?WC? This is live so not the original recording which is a pity, but thatâs acrimony for you! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XdJ7eWXl1Fc And from Some Things Never Change, which is an inexorable truth - and just because I like it ⦠ Born on this day ... - Ruby - 23-07-2016 David Essex, OBE, was born on this day in 1947, in London, England. Pop singer/songwriter who was at the zenith of his popularity in the 70âs and 80âs â fortunately for him, he had a good voice plus good looks, both of which have continued to stand him in good stead, career-wise, at any rate! He still has loyal fans. He released 29 albums between 1973 and 2013 and has maintained a touring presence, as well as appearing on stage and in numerous film and TV productions. Mike Batt and Tim Rice wrote this for him â at his request ⦠âA Winterâs Taleâ â https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y28fyO0JreA This was quite well known, I think â "Silver Dream Machine" from the movie Silver Dream Racer which he starred in with Beau Bridges (a bit of the movie on this clip first) â https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Phg3e-iV9SE Another one of his hits â âHold Me Closeâ â https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aWGjR680Xms And the title track off his critically acclaimed debut album, Rock On, which was produced by Jeff Wayne ⦠(Essex was the artilleryman in War of the Worlds) - Born on this day ... - Ruby - 26-07-2016 Roger Meddows Taylor was born on this day in 1949, in Norfolk, England. Best known as Queenâs drummer, heâs a multi-instrumentalist and vocalist of some note (capable of hitting E5 in full voice, in concert, to be precise!). Itâs his high falsetto youâre hearing in âBohemian Rhapsodyâ during the âI see a little silhouetteâ section. In other trivia, heâs had a species of Brazilian damselfly named after him â Heteragrion rogertaylori - for his â¦âpowerful sound, wonderful lyrics and raspy voice (that) have enchanted the world for over four decadesâ, and he was, controversially, the first living person, other than a member of the royal family, to appear on a British Royal Mail postage stamp (it must be said - itâs a very vague and indistinct background image with Freddie in full flight in the foreground, and itâs the size of, well ⦠a postage stamp!). Roger Taylor also wrote and co-wrote a number of Queenâs songs and, in addition to other projects along the way, including producing, he has, to date, recorded 5 solo albums. His most recent, as seems to be in vogue among mature rock stars, is a bit of a statement. In his own words â¦. "What happened to the protest song? Music is now so polished, shiny and predictable, we have forgotten to try and say something with it. I am getting old and like everyone, have the right to say something about the "state of control" we live under - powerless to do anything about it. In case you hadn't noticed. The high street is full of holes. We are fighting a pointless actively negative war which is killing our young soldiers and which we simply cannot afford. This war promotes and prolongs terrorism. This is our Vietnam. Unwinnable. Pointless. We are taxed and retaxed while the nation is not only broke but utterly bankrupt, being propped up with tax payers' money and money which is simply printed. We are spied upon by 5 million cameras. We have thousands of petty rules and regulations more than ever before â no wonder people are bewildered and confused. As a nation we own almost nothing including water, electricity, gas, airspace and major manufacturers. Personal privacy is non-existent. We are directionless. I'm pissed off â you should be too." ..... Go Roger! This is one of the tracks from that album, the wryly titled Fun on Earth ⦠(fellow mature statement maker, Jeff Beck doing guitar duty here) â |
