Born on this day ... - Ruby - 23-12-2016 Thereâs a bumper crop of birthdays today ⦠Iâm picking two. First up, Edward Louis Severson, aka Eddie Vedder who was born on this day in 1964, in Evanston, Illinois, USA. He is, of course, the lead singer and guitarist of Pearl Jam and he has a totally unique vocal sound/timbre which is at least one of the reasons why, I think, heâs so widely recognised and feted. Heâs performed with an astonishing array of other musicians and appears to be in demand. Heâs released two solo albums, if you count Into the Wild, for which he composed all the music, as well as having written songs on request for a number of soundtracks. In addition to music, heâs a keen surfer and hobnobs with Kelly Slater and Laird Hamilton, and fellow surfing musos Jack Johnson and Ben Harper, and Tim Finn. A busy boy this one â he also hangs out with Pete Townshend, Chris Cornell and Bill Murray. Vedder is known for his outspoken social and political views, e.g. environmental concerns and the fate of death row prisoners â he seems to have found a kindred spirit in Neil Young and has covered his songs many times as well as appearing with him. Here we go ⦠My favourite from Into the Wild ⦠https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mev_FBj0Fyk Covering âHarvest Moonâ ⦠https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k1DFifr7iYg Right at home with the everlasting wrinklies :biggrin1: â¦. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I7wip0eYQCU With Mark Seymour of Hunters and Collectors ⦠https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vkRNz0tR7tc And at Madison Square Garden with Roger Waters who looks pretty pleased with the result â¦. Born on this day ... - Ruby - 23-12-2016 Anthony Edwin Phillips was born on this day in 1951, in London, England. He was a founding member of Genesis and initially, their lead guitarist. He left after their first two albums to learn to play more instruments and also to study classical guitar, but also because he didnât much enjoy performing in public, I believe. He continued to collaborate with past colleagues though, and new ones too, including Andy Latimer of Camel â he co-wrote and contributed to their The Single Factor. He also appears on Mike Rutherfordâs Smallcreepâs Day. Additionally, he has released in the region of 30 solo albums through the years â leaving the prog behind and exploring other avenues. Some very worthy work heâs done too! At present, he and Steve Hackett are working on a four tracks which will be contributed to a project called Harmony for Elephants, a book of photographs and insights into elephant behaviour and how humans and elephants can co-exist, with CD, etc., which is intended to benefit the charity organisation Elephants for Africa. I hope to get hold of that when it's published. What a pleasure to listen to Seventh Heaven, a fairly recent album by Mr Phillips and Andrew Skeet. An absolutely delightful recording (for me, not sure many here will agree!) showcasing exquisite, delicate melodies and a rare finesse. IMHO there is a lot to be said for exercising restraint â knowing when to put down the paintbrush, so to speak, and I think thatâs what they achieved here. I would say itâs neo classical/neo romantic instrumental if one has to categorise, with very little vocal work and when there is, itâs operatic. The orchestration is superb as are the arrangements â they used an ensemble of leading strings session players (stunning violins and cello) as well as a full 70 piece orchestra for some parts which lends something of a cinematic sound. In their own words, this is a âdouble album of orchestral and acoustic portraitsâ. Sometimes protracted âlightâ (as opposed to more serious and heavy) works can descend into the domain of the banal, so Iâm pleased to say that this transcends that horrible fate. Thereâs variation and texture in the pieces, and plenty of different instruments to prick up the ears, eight of which Anthony Phillips himself plays here, including the oud and bazouki and a whole range of guitars. In a word, itâs exquisite! The cover artwork ... ![]() And this beautiful track, which really takes you away! Born on this day ... - Ruby - 24-12-2016 Doyle Bramhall II was born on this day in 1968, in Austin, Texas. He is a producer, songwriter, guitarist, vocalist and drummer with a couple of solo albums to his credit, the most recent of which was released this year â Rich Man. He is much in demand as a sideman, particularly by Eric Clapton with whom he is most closely associated, and Roger Waters who used him for his In The Flesh tour (big shoes to fill!!). Heâs also played with Sheryl Crow, Elton John, Tedeschi Trucks Band, etc., etc. From Wiki â âBramhall is notable as one of the few guitarists who plays with his instrument strung upside-down. He plays left-handed, but the instrument is strung upside-down with the high E on the top. This unusual arrangement of the strings gives his playing a unique sound, because he bends the strings by pulling them downwards rather than upwards, the customary approach. Others who have bent strings in this direction include Albert King, Eric Gales, Otis Rush, Barbara Lynn, Coco Montoya and the late blues guitarist Jeff Healey, who played with his instrument flat on his lap for stability and increased string flexibility.â <<Some of that ⦠http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_A2AziIH9Mk The title track from Rich Man â Born on this day ... - Ruby - 24-12-2016 PS Admins. I am still unable to edit in this thread. When I click on 'edit post' it takes me to a blank page which then means copying and pasting the original post which often goes out of format for some reason, and is just a mission. So, apologies for typos etc., ... too onerous to fix 'em! Funny, it doesn't happen in all the threads. Born on this day ... - Music Head - 24-12-2016 ^^ I will look into this no time right now Born on this day ... - CRAZY-HORSE - 24-12-2016 I get the same thing in a couple of threads also, thought it was just me, or I was doing something wrong. Born on this day ... - Inna Selez - 26-12-2016 On Christmas night in 1976 was born Armin van Buuren - Dutch DJ, record producer, musician, remixer, pianist and songwriter. Since 2001, he has hosted a weekly radio show called A State of Trance, which currently is broadcast to more than 37 million weekly listeners in 84 countries on over 100 FM radio stations. He has been ranked the No. 1 DJ by DJ Mag a record of five times, five years in a row. In 2016 he is ranked number 4. Armin released 6 studio albums. Born on this day ... - Ruby - 27-12-2016 Mike Pinder was born on this day in 1941, in Birmingham, England. He was a founding member of the Moody Blues, remaining with the group up until Seventh Sojourn and contributing one track to Octave after his departure â he was replaced in the band by Patrick Moraz. Aside from the mellotron, Pinder was known for his mystical contributions to the band in the tracks he wrote, which were a good few, and he narrated and sang lead on most of those too. He earned himself the title âmellotronmanâ, experimenting madly with the thing which was notoriously unreliable â not necessarily the optimal way to go for live performances, but hey, he somehow managed to make it work! His contribution to the whole was by no means negligible; up until he left, he was the chief musical arranger for the group, and played organ, piano, harpshichord, moog, tablas, keyboards and percussion, autoharp, tambura, and acoustic and electric guitars and additionally, was responsible for key vocal harmonies throughout. He made a couple of solo albums after the Moody Blues but never really enjoyed a great deal of success, he simply doesnât have the voice, and in any event, it would seem his heart was in another place; he went to work as a consultant for Atari computer corporation in the field of music synthesis. He has since helped others along the road of their creative purpose and continues to be involved in the biz one way or another. He wrote and sings this sequence from On the Threshold of a Dream, which album I happen to favour ⦠(Graeme Edge wrote âThe Dreamâ which starts it off, with Pinder reciting) ⦠ Born on this day ... - Ruby - 30-12-2016 Happy Birthday to Jeff Lynne who was born on this day in 1947, in Birmingham, England, and who I canât believe hasnât been posted in this thread yet! He is one of those artists whose biography seems too daunting to paraphrase effectively, so Iâm not going to try. Suffice to say he is the founding, sole remaining, and only continuous member of the Electric Light Orchestra as well as having released a couple of solo albums and being one of the members/producers of the Travelling Wilburys. He sings, plays the guitar, piano, bass guitar and the cello, and in addition to his own stuff has produced records for a few other luminaries. âTicket to the Moonâ from ELO's Time, because itâs just fab ⦠https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CJdZTNLkpuA âMargaritaâ from The Travelling Wilburys I ⦠https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f4CWm8oGeIg ⦠Lucky and Charlie Wilbury sharing lead vocals with Otis doing the bridge. I expect Nelson and Lefty were in there too, in one guise or another! Oh, what the ⦠hereâs âTweeter and the Monkey Manâ as well, (Roy Orbison (Lefty) didnât make it onto this track â¦) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lEJOekbg2lE And from his solo album Armchair Theatre with George Harrison on acoustic and slide guitars as well as backing vocals ⦠ Born on this day ... - Ruby - 01-01-2017 Joseph Allen âCountry Joeâ McDonald was born on this day in 1942, in Washington D.C. He was the lead singer of Country Joe and the Fish who are probably best remembered for their protest song, âI Feel Like Iâm Fixinâ to Die Ragâ â¦. In addition to the Fish, he has released 36 solo albums and written literally hundreds of songs during the course of his long career. Heâs always used his voice and music for protest whenever heâs deemed it necessary, and continues to take an anti-war stance. This track is from his Thinking of Woody Guthrie and was penned by that gentleman ⦠https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t-p1ZSXU7o8 And this is from his War War War, based on the poetry of Robert W Service ⦠âThe Man from Athabascaâ ⦠https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A_QpLJaKDCI |
