What Are You Listening To? - Lovely Linda - 19-05-2016
Pharmcat Wrote:I've been listening to The Band, The Avett Brothers, Cheap Trick and the Eagles. Just got back from Myrtle Beach so Jimmy Buffett is on the brain and a local golden oldies channel down there played a lot of Supremes. "Reflections" is a cool song. Oh, and Vince Gill. Anyone wanting to talk about any of these bands I'm game.
I know all but Cheap Trick. Going to youtube to check them out.
I love Diana Ross and the Supremes. They were one of my fave groups way back when.
I sang their songs all of the time.
Just getting into Vince you know since he liked Merle so much  Have to respect him for that

Don't care for Cheap Trick, Cathy. Please explain why you like them. I'm confused.
I know some of our tastes are different.

Anbody here like John Conlee? He had some good songs.
He also put on a great show at his concert. The girls loved him back then

PAUL KELLY WITH UNCLE BILL "smoke" cd, 1999
career stats:
studio albums.........20
singles...................53
this album..............#36 AU
Kelly's twelfth studio set...
no, Paul's uncle doesn't play on it....
there is no Uncle Bill at all....
its a bluegrass/folk outfit from here in Australia...
so, Paul has written songs in the vein of Bluegrass...
well, if he wanted to put this music to any of his songs it
would achieve the same effect because Kelly has always been
closer to country than rock IMO...
main problem I have here is that the music is restrictive when its
given a label and it certainly is here...
not a bad album, best track on here is something I could have
imagined The Carter Family singing in their heyday!
I LIKE THIS ALBUM

I have two, maybe three of their albums...
they call them country, I don't know about that...
sure theres some country but Americana sounds better I think!...
only one song I don't like on this one and three I love...
lots of brass instruments on this one also, and I love a good sax?!?!
the album won a Grammy for "best country album" in 2012.

Fotheringay - the one and only album by the group formed by Sandy Denny after she left Fairport Convention. It's brilliant IMHO - and this is how it begins ...

LORETTA LYNN "full circle" cd, 2016
career stats:
studio albums..........58
singles....................93
this album.................#4 US Country...#19 US...#54 AU...#3 CAN Country...#23 CAN
singles:
"everything it takes"........................no chart action
"everybody wants to go to heaven"....no chart action
84 years young....
Loretta could stand there and belch and fart and I would probably buy the cd of it!
she is the greatest female country singer of all time IMO....!
anyway,
album number fifty eight for Loretta, and a decade or so since her previous album, which incidently,
was produced by Jack White(no,not this one, the previous one called "van lear rose")...
this was the fortieth album of hers to hit the US Country top10, and also the highest debuting album
on the regular US Billboard charts in her career!
about hal the album was written by Loretta including a couple of re recordings of old songs of hers...
a couple of other covers also and a couple specially written for her....
Elvis Costello guests on one track, but he only supplies backing vocals and guitar work...
Willie Nelson duets on one track....which happens to be the best one on here...
its the sort of song that I they never recorded another song, that this is a good way to go out IMO...
love the video for it too, from the Grand Old Opry, where lets face it, they are the Opry and the Opry is them!
not a bad album, her voice is a bit croaky on a couple of tracks but it deos warm up over the album...
she covers "always on my mind" on this one also, i'd have loved her to do this one twenty, thirty, forty years ago,
she'd have nailed it back then for sure!
only one WTF moment on here....a cover of her early 1960s hit "fist city", seriously, there was no need to re record it IMO,
that would be like trying to redo "coalminers daughter" and expecting that to work all over again!
the girl can still cut it with the best of them IMO, and to all the youngsters out there who think they are country...
take a listen to Loretta, she is country, youre all pale imitations!
I LIKE THIS ALBUM
worst track: fist city
best track: lay me down (with Willie Nelson)
