Phoebe Snow died on this day in 2011 - she was 60. Complications arising from cerebral heamorrhage.

She had an extraordinary voice – a contralto with a four octave range, she came and went from the music industry for fairly long stretches at a time, choosing instead to devote her time and energy to caring for her daughter who had been born severely brain damaged, and who was the absolute joy and light of Phoebe’s life. She was an amazing woman; Valerie, her daughter, who had not been expected to survive more than couple of years, died in 2007 at the age of 31 and Phoebe dedicated every live show she ever did, to her daughter. From what I can gather, they each were the recipients and givers of a whole lot of love.

Despite her many challenges, Phoebe was acknowledged as always coming back sounding as strong as ever. She performed with Paul Simon and was associated with him for some time, also Janis Ian, Dave Grusin, Dave Mason (who plays on some of her albums) and Steve Howe.

The song for which she is best known is “Poetry Man”, her first charting single - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CPaNdTAC_ZE.

I totally love her rendition of “Piece of My Heart” –

Richard Fariña died on this day in 1966 – a motorcycle accident – a fun ride as a passenger that went horribly wrong. The driver lost control on an S bend and Fariña was killed instantly – he was 29. The driver survived.

Singer, songwriter, musician and author of Cuban and Irish descent. He is regarded as an important protest singer/singer on the early folk scene. He was hanging around in Greenwich Village during that time of the great blossoming of artistry, poetry and ideals, where he met and befriended the young Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, and Mimi, her little sister whom he later married. There are some who say that had he lived, he’d have given Dylan a run for his money. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Fari%C3%B1a

Fariña’s left as his legacy, what has become a cult novel, “Been Down So Long It Looks Like Up To Me”, and two albums with Mimi Fariña, Celebrations for a Grey Day and Reflections in a Crystal Wind. Aside from the albums, another of the songs he wrote, recorded by Joan Baez, is “Birmingham Sunday” a song lamenting the 16[SUP]th[/SUP] Street Baptist Church bombing in Alabama in 1963. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WQ0y-vO9QLE

Narciso Yepes died on this day in 1997. Renowned Spanish classical guitarist who invented/designed the ten string guitar. It’s almost as big as he is!

From wiki – “Apart from being a consummate musician, Yepes was also a significant scholar. His research into forgotten manuscripts of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries resulted in the rediscovery of numerous works for guitar or lute. He was also the first person to record the complete lute works of Bach on period instruments (14-course baroque lute). In addition, through his patient and intensive study of his instrument, Narciso Yepes developed a revolutionary technique and previously unsuspected resources and possibilities.”
