"new release" albums, singles and dvds in the UK for week commencing 16th December 2016:
And they're off! Yep, the Christmas Number 1 race is underway from Friday 16th December, and the contest is wide open, thanks to some surprise releases and strong performers already in the Official Singles Chart.But it's sales and streams in this final week that can make all the difference â stats from 16â22 December are the only ones that count for the Christmas Number 1.
There are a host of contenders hoping to make the most of this race week sales surge to gain a new entry. A supergroup set up in the name of MP Jo Cox, who was murdered earlier this year, features stars such as Kaiser Chiefs' Ricky Wilson, KT Tunstall, Cockney Rebelâs Steve Harley, and David Gray covering the Rolling Stones' You Can't Always Get What You Want.

A '90s indie hit is also vying for the festive top spot. Following the death of Inspiral Carpets' drummer Craig Gill, the band's fans hope to see 1994 hit Saturn 5 take the Christmas Number 1. They're backed by Oasis, the Stone Roses and Shed Seven.
Salford lad James 'SHINNy' Davenport's, confidently-titled âChristmas Number 1â, already has over 100,000 fans on Facebook and will be hoping it can live up to its title, while The King Lot feat. the Jolly Boys will be trying to raise as much as possible for the MS Society, with Wings.
Other contenders with recent chart momentum are also serious contenders for the top spot, including Clean Bandit's Rockabye, X Factor winner Matt Terry's When Christmas Comes Around, and Louis Tomlinson and Steve Aoki's Just Hold On.
Other classic covers challenging for the Christmas Number 1 spot include Justin Timberlake and Anna Kendrick's version of True Colors, a new version of The Living Years by London Hospices Choir & Paul Carrack, while Terry Wogan's version of the Floral Dance is also hoping to make a return to the chart and improve on its 1978 chart placing of Number 21.

Norwich's Proclaimers Christmas Collective are hoping to be the first festive-themed chart-topper in over a decade with Dance Tonight (It's Christmas) while novelty tracks from Southend News Network & Annie Humphrey and Robb Johnson and the Corbynistas are making a play for the Christmas Number 1 spot. Hey, it worked for Mr Blobby, so there's every chance!
The full Christmas Top 40 will be counted down from 4pm on BBC Radio 1's Official Chart, with Greg James. The full festive Top 100 will appear right here on OfficialCharts.com from 5.45pm.

My attitude to Christmas-themed music charts and all things Christmas is: if people want to enjoy the occasion in their own way, let them. You don't have to join the party if you don't want to.

i agree with you bob_32,
but just about every musician in the UK since their charts began wants that elusive "Christmas #1", its a coveted achievement in the industry apparently,
when I say "just about every musician" I mean the pop orientated ones.....
it doesn't have to be a yuletide themed song, it just has to be #1...
not sure why, maybe the biggest music ales of the year are the ones in that week prior to Xmas, I don't know?!??
I might have to check but im pretty sure Cliff Richard has had more #1 singles over Christmas than any other artist in the UK.(but I may be wrong)

it appears I was wrong, The Beatles hit the top four times over Christmas week, Cliff managed it three times, as did Spice Girls.

There's only one actual Christmas song in that list that is really deserving of the No. 1 spot.
The rash of songs in recent years that were on top for one week only suggests that what you say is true: that artists and companies are specifically trying for that particular target. It also, for me, kills any interest in what's on the list these days.

I tend to turn off the radio a lot more over December simply because I am sick to death of hearing the same old crap over and over ad nauseam. In Ireland you are guaranteed to hear 'Fairytale of New York' about twenty times a day. There's some sort of campaign going on to try and force radio stations to play Irish music 70% of the time EVERY DAY. That will be the end of local radio for me. I cannot sit and listen to diddly-dee-diddly-dum crap 24 hours a day. It's just a form of brainwashing to get people to listen to Irish music all the time (and for the musicians to get paid more royalties - the REAL reason they are trying to push this despite the fact that musicians do not pay tax here) What a completely insane idea.

For example, I think "We are the World", the US counterpart released soon after the Band Aid one, is a horrible song.
I admit to being unfamiliar with the Cliff Richard one.
Boney M: over the years I initially got tired of this group, and later came to quite dislike them. They wewre techincally proficient in their performances I suppose, but there was a curious soulless quality about their singing, It was mechanical, with almost no emotion. Someone who did not understand English would have found little to distinguish between, say, Mary's Boy Child, Ma Baker, or Rivers of Babylon.
