Also, their single careers wasnt near how they performed in group. All though they are all musical geniouses and Beatles is my favorite band of all time, the chemistry these lads had - I don't think anyone can compare with them. Stones maybe

i think you are not that far from the truth with that comment/statement fred....
George had the foresight,ingenuity and overall knowledge to make the Beatles what they were...
even to the extent to telling them to change songs...classic example was "love me do" which was originally a ballad, but George told the lads to 'beef it up' a little, they did.
George's expertise was also,IMO, instrumental in creating not only the "sgt peppers" album with all its sound effects etc, but was also as much,if not more than repsonsible for their development of sound from Rubber Soul onwards...
this is why as solo artists they never quite matched the hype of their songs as a unit overall(there was no GM to oversee the raw tracks)...
IMO Paul's two best finished/sounding albums as a solo artist were probably "tug of war" and "flaming pie", and why?, because George had a hand in produicng them...
he,Geroge Martin, was a genius twiddling the knobs and the Beatles proved it!

I heard a Travelling Wilburys song, which could be considered a George Harrison solo project, on the radio today and what I liked was the fact that it was recorded in the eighties, but does not have that horrible eighties production. It was End of the Line, which also has great upbeat lyrics and, although credited to the band, were probably written by Harrison. I especially like, 'Well it's all right, remember to live and let live/ Well it's all right, the best you can do is forgive.'
George Harrison showed a lot of promise with The Beatles, but I found his solo material disappointing. I think this was because he needed the moral support of Paul McCartney, who said his favourite track on Abbey Road is Harrison's Something. If McCartney had produced Harrison's albums, they might have been more polished. As for Lennon and McCartney, they needed each other's little finishing touches. So, for example, Lennon suggested the French sound on McCartney's Michelle, which made the song great. Ringo Starr was an underrated drummer, his work on Abbey Road is constantly inventive, so he needed another good group. His potential seems to have come out through Zack Starkey, who is ideal for Roger Daltrey and The Who.
My favourite Beatle is McCartney, because I like his sentimentalism, balanced by Denny Laine in Wings. Band on the Run could, and should, have been a Beatles album. I do not think it has ever been satisfactorily explained why MCartney and Laine fell out.

Very good article Ears!!!! Interesting hypothesis regarding Paul producing George! I saw Macca five years ago and I WILL NEVER FORGET IT !!!!,,,brought me to tears! The Travelling Wilburys Vol. 1 album has End of the Line on it...super group with George, Jeff Lynne(ELO), Tom Petty, Bob Dylan and Roy Orbison! I treasure the two albums that they made!!!!! Good choice!
I favor John for his controversial hard edged songs but at the same time I also love Paul's pop rock songs! The Lennon McCartney team complimented each other to perfection! As for George, Something has to be up there as one of the greatest pop ballads and his guitar work was impeccable! You are correct with respect to Ringo's drumming skills! He is a very good drummer! He had to be as he was a valuable part of the incredible Fab Four musically!

They did start out as a George solo project, "handle with care" had been slated as a George 'b-side' but his record company thought it was better than that,they urged George and Co. To record an album....and the rest is history...
As for the Denny Laine/Macca split....
Laine was fed up with Paul on two levels....
Firstly,
Even though he was a founding member of Wings,Macca was only paying him basic wages and by the time "mull of kintyre" was written,Laine was facing bankruptcy thus Macca gave him a writing credit on that track believing it was a throwaway....how wrong was he?!!!!
Secondly,
Laine was fed up with Macca's drug use and busts, the final straw came when Macca was arrested on the eve of the 1980 Japanese tour.....
Laine packed his bags and left the group....
Macca,when he was released from a Japanese jail after two weeks,tried to get other musos to play with him but no one wanted to get involved with "druggie Paul"...
He announced Wings were over and proceeded to record his "mccartneyII" set

I think the "...and Co." tag is a bit dismissive. However they started, it was a co-equal project 'twixt the participants real soon. From the documentaries I've seen, George Harrison was the catalyst for the Wilbury's, after all who wouldn't want to work with a Beatle? Jeff Lynne made the music cohesive. Everyone wanted Roy Orbison as lead singer and were amazed when he agreed! more good things about them was that they refocused Bob Dylan and Tom Petty did his best work for them.
I read that Denny Laine wanted to continue to play live while McCartney wanted to concentrate on the studio. McCartney tried working with various musicians, with varying degrees of success, but without the chemistry he had with Laine. He said he liked to think that he would have worked with Lennon again, so why not Laine? McCartney seemed to have a good business sense, but he could also make major mistakes - like Heather Mills!
