ELVIS PRESLEY "king creole-soundtrack" 1958, vinyl(not the original but a reissue in 1977) #2 US, #1 UK

this is the album/soundtrack that accompanied the film of the same name, it was Presley's fourth movie and final one before he was drafted into the US Army in the same year. his draft was delayed as he was given permission to complete the picture.
of the eleven tracks here,with a running time of twenty six minutes, only two do not get the full marks, this is because they do not have a life of their own outside the movie IMO.
the album is a mix of rock 'n' roll, soothing ballads and Dixieland Jazz and is nothing short of 1950s rock at its finest, sung by a man who was at the top of his game and a movie of equal stature

THE SMALL FACES "ogden's nut gone flake" 1968 cd #1UK, #159US

Manor Park's Small Faces began life as puppets to an industry still riddled by svangali-like figures keen to exploit the production line model for pop music production. Yet following two years of mod-friendly, peerless power pop/soul for Decca and scary manager, Don Arden (father of Sharon Osbourne), Steve Marriott, Ronnie Lane et al finally escaped to a label that at least understood how to nurture a band's creativity.

Cementing their psychedelic credentials in the summer of 1967 with 'Itchycoo Park' on Andrew Loog Oldham's Immediate label - a prime example of their hallucinogenic cockernee schtick - it was time to show that they could really think in terms of whole albums as opposed to snippets of three-minute glory. The result? Ogden's Nut Gone Flake.
Housed in the world's first circular album sleeve, it was split into two distinct sides. Ogden's' first half consists of six tightly buzzing slices of the psychedelic r 'n' b that was now their stock in trade. Mainly penned by Marriott and Lane the fare divides itself between punchy blue-eyed soul stompers like ''Afterglow (Of Your Love)'' and more chirpy psych knees ups like ''Lazy Sunday'' (inspired by Marriott's feuds with his neighbours).
The second side contains the story of Happiness Stan and his quest to find the moon, interlinked by forgotten master of gobbledegook, Stanley Unwin. Here the songs are considerably more embellished and varied in texture; from the strange faux-folksy 'Mad John' to the more rocking 'Rollin' Over'. The latter featured a brass section while the rest included strings, harps and all the usual trappings expected of bands who wished to signal their serious musical intent. But somehow at the heart of it all was the Small Faces' muscular approach that makes Ogden's certainly the least fey of all English psychedelic classics. This was to be the template for both Marriots' later band Humble Pie and Lane, Ian Maclagan and Kenney Jones' next career move with Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood in the Faces.
Sadly, despite one complete airing on British TV (Colour Me Pop) Ogden's was never to be performed live due, in part, to its complexity. Dispirited by an inability to build on its success (six weeks at number one in 1968), and annoyance that the one hit from the album was the unauthorised release of 'Lazy Sunday' the group finally caved in. In the same way as their contemporaries, the Zombies (with Odessey and Oracle), their masterpiece was their swansong and like that album it remains a pinnacle of British 60s pop.

ive got all three Small Faces albums on cd, and everyone is brilliant,but this one is the most intriguing of the three and on par with The Beatles albums of the late 1960s,
there are also plenty of compilations out there in the marketplace,but theyre not as good as their studio albums...much like the Beatles IMO

CCR "cosmo's factory" 1970,cd, #1 US,UK & Aust.

there are seven Fogerty originals on this one and four covers.
the covers: "my baby left me" is a great rocker and even IMO as an Elvisphile, this is better than The King's 1956 effort. "ooby dooby" was probably the worst song The Big 'O' ever sang, but CCR turn it into something special here(the only version of this song i like!). "heard it through the grapevine"is reasonable but drags on far too long,but still manages "**" from me. "before you accuse me", ive never heard the original blues version, only Claptons 'unplugged' version,but this one is brilliant here.
the album opens up with a 7:11 instrumental, well there is a verse sung at the beginning and at the end, im not one for instrumentals for the most part but this one moves and changes tempo on a regular basis to keep me from pressing the 'next' button, and any instrumental that does that for me is worth '***'.
elsewhere, theres six classic CCR singles, several of which were released prior to the album being released.
there are three 'bonus' tracks on this cd:
"travellin' band"...without the piano and horn section
"up around the bend"...a nice live version
"born on the bayou"...an improv jam with Booker T.

A loose concept album based on reflections on the passing of different parts of the day.

Whilst other UK psychedelicists were getting into Mellotrons to create an orchestral sound, The Moodies used one and then went one step further with this fully orchestrated 1967 record featuring the London Festival Orchestra.

Just because you can use an orchestra doesn't necessarily mean you should - Concerto For Group & Orchestra ?? - but this album pulls it off. Just.

Also features the sort of lyrics that make me wince when they appear on Dave Gilmour material. They get away with it because this was 1967, and a bit of naivety wasn't uncommon back then.

Despite these misgivings, this is a good album and is pretty endearing. Contains Nights in White Satin, which is brilliant.

Allmusic 4+/5 stars.

Just discovered yet another great artist. Was watching Jack Bruce's 1980 Rockpalast concert in which a mysterious (yet familiar) character suddenly came on stage to sing the encore 'Spoonful' with Bruce and the band. After spending the past half hour scouring the internet trying to discover who the hell this guy was it turned out to be Graham Parker!! Any fans of his here?

Squeezing Out Sparks is his best for me.
Reviewed 2 of his albums recently in the alt thread
