What Are You Listening To? - Music Head - 04-02-2011 from my library (vinyl) ![]() Second greatest hits album and the guy had barely got started. His best was yet to come later in the decade. Yet there is not a bad song on here, and most I love. Stevie could combine all the elements that made pop music what it was in the 70's, consistenly topping both r&b and pop charts. He lists Ray Charles as his primary influence, but it would be hard to say just who influenced who. Very hard to pick a best or worst. Gues I'll go with the Beatles cover as the worst, but even that is taken to a different zone with the added funk. Sort of makes it his own. In some cases worst doesn't necessarily mean bad. This compilation reached #10 on the r&b charts and #69 on the pop. If push came to shove, and you had to name your favourite album ever, what would it be ? and what does it score ? very hard to say. Didn't actually start recording these grades till I joined the forum. Although I've been doing the 1-2-3 thing in my head for years, never kept track of them. Two albums always come to mind when asked this, The Wall and Hotel California. Truth is I don't think they would score as high as some best of collections or even some studio country albums. Those recent George Jones come to mind. Guess I'm just a country boy at heart. You can take the boy out of the country, but you can't take the country out of the boy. Yee-haw! What Are You Listening To? - Tiggi - 16-02-2011 ![]() From now-deceased Soul/R&B singer. Not my usual thing, but.... This is from the late '80s, and whilst it has a digital feel to the music (if you know what I mean), LV's vocals belong firmly in '70s Soul. Great voice, but he's largely an interpretative singer, so very few points for song-writing. Quite enjoyed this, but Mrs Tiggi certainly didn't (mumbled something about needing to drop the Van from his surname...) Allmusic 5/5 stars. What Are You Listening To? - Gudlife - 17-02-2011 Right now I'm listening to this song I found this song from an R&B singer named Majic Massey. He has a nice voice, he sounds a lot like Ron Isley. link removed. I've heard his other songs, he has a very good traditional R&B voice. What Are You Listening To? - Tiggi - 19-02-2011 ![]() Since hearing her debut, Baduizm, I've thought the intelligence EB brings to the party made her stand out from most of her peers. Jazzy, Soulish, Hip-Hop (where's Randy when you need him ?) that plays like a cynical alternative State of The Union address. As with most Hip-Hop, there are plenty of references here that I don't understand, but that doesn't detract from a good album. Part 2 to follow... AllMusic 4+/5 stars. What Are You Listening To? - Tiggi - 22-02-2011 ![]() Far less Hip-Hoppy than the above. This one is much more Jazzy Soul, and I'd say it's a strong Soul album by any stretch. Her voice really is a cut above, IMV... What Are You Listening To? - Tiggi - 24-02-2011 ![]() 1987 release from South African R&B singer/guitarist. A mix of Jazzy R&B songs, and Jazzier instrumentals featuring JB on acoustic. There are unmistakeable echoes of Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, & Lionel Richie in his voice, and the guitaring is strongly influenced by George Benson. Not a bad album, but not a great one either... AllMusic 3/5 stars. What Are You Listening To? - Tiggi - 03-03-2011 ![]() This one has drifted onto the Buy List, then back off again a number of times. Could have dropped off altogether, but thankfully didn't. Sade's usual Jazzy Soul, but given an appropriate Trip-Hoppy make-over. Nice indeed. Mrs Tiggi particularly liked this. Allmusic 3/5 stars. |
