LADY GAGA "harlequin"
release date: 27th September 2024
chart stats: US #20, UK #11, AU #40, CAN #66
format owned: vinyl
a companion album to "the joker: folie a deux" soundtrack
some songs on here are the slightly different versions to the ones in the movie,
others are her versions of ones Phoenix sings in the movie,
and finally others are jazz standards similar to the ones she recorded with Tony Bennett a few years ago
all up a very good album IMO because i love her singing jazz songs
I LIKE THIS ALBUM
fave: Phoenix sings this on the soundtrack
tracks:
1: good morning ***
2: get happy 2024 **
3: oh when the saints ***

PAUL WELLER "66"
release date: 24th May 2024
chart stats: UK #4
format owned: vinyl and compact disk
seventeenth solo album, 30th overall
title refers to his age at time of release
rock, soul/r+b, pop, ballads, all the usual suspects for a Weller album
i dont know,
with each album he releases (his last six in fact) i have really struggled and this is no different
i still cannot like at least a third of this album, some of the ones i like are borderline likes but theres one i really love too
a couple of tracks, "nothing" and the album closer "burn out" have a distinct latter day Bowie feel (his last two albums)
im just about at the point now where this lifelong Weller fan is about to ,sadly, give up on his albums.
as a late added footnote, Lynne actually really likes this album and her favorite tracks are "soul wandering" and "nothing"
I DO NOT LIKE THIS ALBUM
fave:
tracks:
1: ship of fools *
2: flying fish *
3: jumble queen **
4: nothing ***
5: my best friends' coat *
6: rise up singing *
7: i woke up **
8: a glimpse of you *

SNOW PATROL "the forest is the path"
release date: 13th September 2024
chart stats: UK #1
format owned: vinyl
Irish alt rock band
eighth studio album, i own all eight
one of the melodic newish bands out there IMO
album starts off quite mellow for the first two tracks but after that we get the sounds we would expect for a Snow Patrol album for several tracks before mellowing out again
i guess the songs are of a reflective and personal nature lyrically
whether that is because of the whole coming out of Covid sensations or that a band member left the group prior to recording this i have no idea
theres almost a Neil Finn "out of silence" vibe on several tracks most notably the title track
i think that in their entire career i would struggle to find tracks of theirs that i do not like but i find two so whether that means something prophetic going forward i do not know at this stage
BTW, i love the cover art of this album
I LIKE THIS ALBUM
fave:
tracks:
1: all **
2: the beginning **
3: everythings here and nothings lost ***
4: your heart home **
5: this is the sound of your voice **
6: hold me in the fire ***
7: years that fall ***
8: never really tire *
9: these lies *
10: what if nothing breaks **
11: talking about hope **

MARK KNOPFLER "one deep river"
release date: 12th April 2024
chart stats: UK #3, AU #48, US #157
format owned: compact disk
his tenth solo album (excluding soundtrack releases)
not as many country/folky as some of his previous albums
majority is more inline with Dire Straits quietest moments though with a couple of uptempo tracks thrown in the mix
quality songwriting and lyrics as usual but would really expect anything less from Mr.K ???
a solid album from a guy 46 years into his recording career
I LIKE THIS ALBUM
fave: almost a lullaby feel to it
tracks:
1: two pairs of hands **
2: ahead of the game **
3: smart money **
4: scavengers yard ***
5: black tie jobs ***

PAUL WELLER "supplement 66" (EP)
release date: 19th October 2024
chart stats: no chart activity
format owned: vinyl
a limited edition vinyl only release of four songs that were originally only released as bonus tracks on the Japanese version of "66"
four tracks in total jazz fusion, acid jazz style songs
two cool tracks and two awful tracks on here
not really an essential release, more a release for the diehards like me i guess
and if i was really sarcastic i would say anymore than four tracks and i probably wouldnt like it LOL
I LIKE THIS ALBUM (ep)
fave has a real Style Council vibe which i love
tracks:

Rosé "rosie"
release date: 6th December 2024
chart stats: too new to have charted
format owned: compact disk
debut album from the New Zealand born BlackPink K-Pop member
big hit "apt" features the brilliant Bruno Mars and it is infectiously catchy (an earworm i guess)
the rest of the album isnt as uptempo and catchy but still very good
hearing some Taylor Swift influences through most tracks, which is okay because i am a Tay-tay fan
album just drags for a couple of tracks too long otherwise this would have been the first album posted that i love but alas
I LIKE THIS ALBUM
fave:
tracks:
1: number one girl ***
2: 3AM **
3: two years ***
4: toxic till the end ***

KASEY CHAMBERS "backbone"
release date: 4th October 2024
chart stats: AU #3
format owned: vinyl, autographed as it was pre ordered from her website
Kasey's thirteenth studio album, i own them all
a quality REAL country artist from Australia
so, country, folk and bluegrass on this album
has a duet on here with her ex husband called 'the divorce song' which is a humorous look at that serious subject
also on board is a banjo pickin' cover of Eminem's "lose yourself", which although it does not really fit on the album it is actually a decent song.
not her best album and ive mentioned this a few times previously in this thread that i think the album is a bit too long, not for the tracks themselves but for the 65 minutes in length, pretty sure they could have shortened a few of the tracks but hey, she is the writer and i am the listener LOL
I LIKE THIS ALBUM
fave:
tracks:
1: a new day has come **
2: backbone **
3: a love like springsteen *
4: dart n feather ***
5: for better or worse **
6: little red riding hood ***
7: silverado girl **

9: arlo *
10: broken cup **

LIAM GALLAGHER & JOHN SQUIRE "liam gallagher & john squire"
release date: 1st March 2024
chart stats: UK #1, AU #65
format owned: compact disk
a collaboration between the Oasis frontman, Gallagher, and ex-Stone Roses guitarist/songwriter, Squire
all songs written by Squire and all vocals by Gallagher
sort of alt-rock/post-britpop and psychedelic rock
some very good songs on here, the only ones i seem to not like are the more psychedelia style ones
I LIKE THIS ALBUM
fave:
tracks:
1: raise your hands ***
2: mars to liverpool ***

release date: 12th July 2024
chart stats: US #29, US Country #9, UK Country #5
format owned: vinyl
JBS is the alter ego of the brilliant Kentuckian Sturgill Simpson
hearing the likes of Gram Parsons and Allman Brothers throughout this one
solid writing and performing from Sturgill (i mean, isnt Sturgill a great name?!)
another great album from a very underappreciated and often overlooked artist who deserves more than he gets
I LOVE THIS ALBUM
fave:
tracks:
1: swamp of sadness **

GLASS ANIMALS "i love you so f***ing much"
release date: 19th July 2024
chart stats: UK #5, AU #5, US #11
UK pop/indi-rock band
fourth album, a first for me
first time hearing the whole album
purchased after MH's positive review earlier in the year
pretty mellow and inoffensive compared to the album title
album started off pretty bad with two tracks i did not like, the remainder made the grade though
probably not something i would necessarily have purchased if i would have heard it but okay nonetheless
I LIKE THIS ALBUM
fave:
tracks:
1: show pony *
2: whatthehellishappening? *
