wait...wait.. I wasn't saying that main stream music is musically sucks. I just hope that just individual artists have the same opportunities as those main streamers. However I am glad that nowadays we can share our individual music with each other thru lots of internet medias, such as youtube! I believe anybody can do music if they want to.

I agree with Raver. I spent 35 years in the workplace trying to convert pop tune listeners to something different, be it in underground, jazz, classical, alternative, folk, alternative country, even goth ! To no avail , they stuck to the RADIO songs and bought anything that came from Canadian and American idol in the past few years !
Too many genres now in music. Pink Floyd, Queen, Coldplay are popular because they had significant radio airplay for years when there were not so many genres - hip hop, dance, electronica, pop.
Coldplay are much better Live like a lot of groups but I do consider their studio albums mainly mainstream. Watched a concert DVD by them and the people with me remarked that they don't sound like that on the radio ! That's because in a concert setting the groups "stretch out" or jam a bit as opposed to the three minute radio song. The Rolling Stones always disappointed me somewhat because outside of Midnight Rambler (featuring Mick Taylor on slide) they only basically duplicated their Radio Hits and still did so up to their last concert.
There were 25 people in our office and myself and Fred went outside of radio music to explore new groups and different music ! So 2 out of 25 is only a meagre 8%, so perhaps let's say 10% of music listeners will go outside the box ! I think that's a fair representation ...maybe an argument for 20% but that's as high as any logical assumption can go IMHO !
Also a lot of young people here in Nova Scotia like country music from the radio. As Raver said let people listen to what they want and let it go. It's almost impossible to turn people on to new music without getting a reply of - "That's Weird ! "
I only know a few people (mostly musicians) who I can surround myself with who appreciate all kinds of music like myself and the esteemed members of the GREAT MD !

My problem is that I like so many different likes of music. Not all of one genre but songs from many different people across many genres. As to influencing any one else I have given that up. It comes down to listening to what I like and searching for ones I might like that I have not heard yet....

I've summed this up many of times in my life. It's the catchyness factor......... and women. You're probably like "what is the sexest n00b talking about"; hear me out. Mainstreams songs nowadays have 2 factors; they're either dancable, or hit home. Women LOVE both. All it needs is a good beat, or catchy lyrics and their hooked. Now these commercially catchy songs are being played by women so much, that men start to enjoy them. Plus, who doesn't enjoy a girl dropping it like it's luke-warm, hence why DJs plug it. Once we're infected these mediocre songs built to make us remember the chorus, there's no turning back. After dancing with a girl at a club to one catchy song we liked, they play another. then another. then another. now we have 4 songs stuck in our heads all day. On top of that, women physically can not overplay ANYTHING.
99% of the music I listen to underground. So you best believe I'm not at the club much ; )

As a woman I have to respond to this. I listen to very little 'mainstream' music. Why not just blame the gay population? Haven't you heard they love to dance? And they have the disposable income to blow on their favorite pop stars? That would make you a homo-phobe just as this is making you sound like a sexist. I see plenty of men with horrible taste in music or an inability to let go of whatever genre was popular in their youth. Record companies keep churning out the same garbage 'alternative rock' formula for men coming up on middle age and they buy it. Let's just agree that most of the population has bad taste or doesn't have the time to seek out new bands and they listen to whatever is spoon-fed to them by the record companies. The record companies who have given up on seeking out new talent and developing it. It's too costly for them I guess.

And yes I agree totally that the general music public will not listen to anything but the latest pop release ! I know because most people I know and relatives have no clue regarding alternate music !

Way to go Trace! Living in Texas most of the men my age are not open to new "stuff" and young men my kiddo's age are mostly listening to rap and or hiphop, but I can get them to at least listen to music I find in searches for new, neat, interested or obscure sounds.

@TraceNspace I didn't mean to offend in any way; it's just a theory. i'm in no way sexest, or putting down pop music. I generally listen to underground music, but I love the black eyed peas ; )
ANYWAYS; i'm sure some guy you hung out with now listens to a genre you showed him. that's actually how I got into metal. obviously this theory isn't 100% but I do see it all the time. more girls listen to pop then guys and most guys spend their life chasing women.
