Try the likes of Robert Johnson, Elmore James, Blind Willy Johnson, and Blind Willie McTell... real roots blues. Then check out Taj Mahal, or Buddy Guy with Junior Wells. See if you can hear how the path leads to the artists you listed. Then scope out Savoy Brown, The Allman Brothers Band, and Elvin Bishop and see if you can extend that musical path there too. It's all one line, and one of the greatest gifts the USA has ever given to the world! Of course, if you wanna go back farther, to West Africa and North Africa, Ireland and France and their respective "roots" music, you could draw that line too.

Excellent points, Gater! When you listen to the old 1920s blues recordings by someone like Charley Patton, man I can really detect rock n roll that far back !!!!!

Hey SteveO! That's kinda what I have been listening to a bunch of lately, and realizing how everyone from Steve Marriott to Aerosmith to even Dave Mustaine have all drawn from the most basic riffs and licks from way back then, and even beyond. Of course I then promptly listen to a Maiden or Babys album as I would hate to seem a snob!
