Why must it be related to an album? Why do rock record collectors behave as though it's substandard if it's not on an album unless it's on the almighty unsanctioned bootleg? Why does this matter?
To me it's like being into reading but only liking paperbacks not newspapers, hardcovers, pamphlets, and so on. Or liking movies and only liking those that have been CGI'd to the hilt or have a 5.1 soundtrack. Or have been released on blu-ray.
Many times I run into this and I think, okay, are you into the music -- really listening to the music -- or are you into collecting things and are more in love with the chase involved in acquiring them? I figure a true music lover would be interested in listening, and the way it's presented just doesn't matter. For me that's certainly true. Is it a single? Is it an album? Is it an EP? Who CARES? Is the music itself any good?

^ I am very very selective with my cd purchases! I pretty much only buy those that I truly enjoy from start to finish and that I'll listen to a lot. A lot of my current listening is on line...hear it once and maybe twice...not often.
The CBC (our national radio) has very good radio programming for all genres...I listen to that also.
Having been a "collector" of sorts for the past 40 years or so I am realising that I don't play many albums anymore and they are collecting dust. I now only buy "great" albums that I enjoy entirely and can't live without...but frankly speaking the list is a very short one.

Interesting points Keef.
Why must it be related to an album? It doesn't need to be but artists who appeal to me usually produce more than one hit or one good song. I really enjoy listening to more than one song by an artist (I get to see the world through their ears), if I really like an artist I will search out their catalogue. In short, I tend to like those who can produce more than 3:00+ minutes of memorable/good music, but have bought my share of singles and EPs and that has been enough by any one artist.
As for boots, depends on the show if it was one I'd have liked to have been there for you bet I want to hear it but most are of no interest.
Album vs EP vs Single. Each have their place, I tend to find the album and if I really like/love it then I'll search for eps and singles related to that release (not the cheapest way to approach your listening but alas it is the way I am comfortable). Sometimes it will go the other direction (Single first then Ep then Album) but with the use of the computer and all of the sound sources on the interweb I can find out pretty quickly if the album will be something I will listen all the way through.
On to the format (yes, I know this isn't really related to your post Keef but I had to weigh in on the cassette discussion). YES format does matter. My goodness I NEVER want to go back to 8-Tracks, nothing more annoying than the "ca-chunk" in the middle of a song. Or how quickly the sound deteriorates on a cassette. As well I really struggle with the mp3/ download culture. The sound of those things is compressed and bland. Take an mp3 player and run it through a decent home stereo then run a LP or CD through the same system - you will fully understand the loss we have suffered with the convenience of mp3s. I liken it to listening to AM radio a good way to get the songs out there and for those who really are interested in the song/artist will search out the official release. Then go out to the record store to get the music to hear how much better it really sounds. Does official release mean album for me? Usually yes, guilty as charged.
I like to read the whole book, not just the chapters that are the most interesting - I want the whole story. Does this mean I own albums that should have been a single? You bet, and I wish I'd just bought the single.
Always searching for music I think is good, that is my "chase".
