Nothing like some early 70's soft rock to make you remember how bland radio was in that period. David Gates and company made the best of it, dropping the hits for a brief time. Don't think I own any studio albums but I did pick up this compilation at some point. Them hits are good stuff, but the rest of the albums must have been total filler. This one probably includes both the best and worst of the groups output. The worst is usually when they tried to rock out. They didn't last long. disbanding over disputes between founding members Gates and James Griffin. Both attempted solo careers with little success. I do have one of those Gates solo albums, which if I remember correctly pretty much sucked. It'll come up in the shuffle at some point.

Not her best for sure. Might have to go back to the Stone Poneys for that. Linda was finding her niche in popularity with this sixth album. Produced by Peter Asher with guest appearances of Andrew Gold, Wendy Waldman, John David Souther, Cissy Houston, Maria Muldaur, and Emmylou who couldn't even save the Hank Williams cover, which unbelievably won a grammy for best female country vocal. Covers were always Lindas thing, so nothing unusual in that respect. A very nice voice, but never one for originality. But who cares, it made it to the top of the U.S. charts. Not that there are not some good songs here. There are. As usual I just prefer the original, and some are just sacred ground.

As the title suggests, this was GM's attempt to be taken seriously as a song-writer, and I'd have to say it's a successful one.
Slick, sophisticated Pop songs, executed very well. Includes a great cover of Stevie Wonder's They Won't go When I go.

The Queen of pop. Has anyone claimed that title yet? I guess Madona deserves it. Don't care for her as a person, but I think she has made some great music over the years and is a great entertainer and even a passable actress. Which brings us to Dick Tracy, which the liner notes of this album say "Songs inspired by or from the film Dick Tracy". The cover is from the movie. I'm probably one of the few people in the country that liked movie, probably because I used to read the Dick Tracy comic strip when I was a kid. Aw, come on, I was a kid! The smash hit Vogue came from this album, and is just ok for me. I do really like a little Hanky Panky now and then. Nothing like a good spanky. The album made it to #2 in the states with Vogue at #1 and Hanky Panky at #10. U.K. did the same except Hanky Panky went to #2. The Hanky Panky live clip is tremendous. Warren Beatty is credible on track 10.

Something tells me, if Karen were alive at the time, she would have said, "Can we take another pic for the album cover please?". But seriously folks, how can you not like the Carpenters? Ok, maybe if you're Iota or something, but other than that? Can't remember any hits that are not included on this compilation. Liner notes are great, as Richard gives a brief recap as to how the song came to be. Not crazy about that Beatles cover or the completely out of character closer, but other than that, nothing bad here. 70's pop at it's finest. Was there a sweeter voice than Karen's? The fact that Close To You became "our song" for my wife and I makes it my favorite.
