What Are You Listening To? - Tiggi - 26-06-2011 I doubt my dabbling with Hip Hop would have been enough to keep Randy on board. I've checked some of the list out on AllMusic, and it looks like I'm about to embark on another voyage of discovery... D-12 arent too bad either What Are You Listening To? - Tiggi - 01-07-2011 ![]() Their fourth from last year. She looks scary on the cover shot !! First came to my attention when some of the band were involved in Amy Winehouse's Back to Black album. Finally got around to checking them out, and they're definitely worth a listen. They're NY-based and specialise in modern day interpretations of '60s Soul, and they're very good at it. Sharon sings her heart out, and the band are tight. Good songs, with contributions from lots of the band members. Whenever I listen to something like this, part of me always wonders if I wouldn't have done better to have invested in a '60s classic instead, but this is certainly a good one. AllMusic 4/5 stars. What Are You Listening To? - Tiggi - 03-07-2011 ![]() i-Pod listening this AM in the garden. EB's first of her New Amerykah albums from 2008. Dare I say this is almost a Badu State of The Union address ?? She picks holes in the provision of US services, whilst providing a rallying call for black Americans to grasp educational opportunities with both hands. You may not like her politics, but the music is seductive, with plenty of chilled Nu-Soul & Hip-Hop grooves, shot through with some Jazzy influences. Good album. AllMusic 4+/5 stars. What Are You Listening To? - tjacks55 - 15-07-2011 I didn't like eminem's last album, Not a lot of good hiphop nowadays in the charts its always the same names...I really dig Drake last one: "Im on One" which is kinda more my thing! In RnB I loved shontelle's album which was pretty awesome and relaxing! Beyonce's album seems pretty rubish compared to what she's done before. I guess Rihanna is taking her spot now....x What Are You Listening To? - Tiggi - 17-07-2011 ![]() On the laptop. 1993 debut. Lots of talk about niggaz, muthas, & the projects ad nauseum. This says nothing to me, and perhaps that's the idea. Not for me... AllMusic 5/5 stars. What Are You Listening To? - Tiggi - 19-07-2011 ![]() On the laptop. Revised version of her third album, from 2008. This is well outside my normal listening parameters, but with a lot of radio exposure to her singles, I've always harboured the thought that there's some talent going on. I have to say that despite all the gratuitous autotune useage, I really enjoyed this and am looking forward to hearing it "properly". I know she's "product", and that there's a team of writers & producers who probably deserve most of the credit for the album, but well produced music is just that... AllMusic 4+/5 stars. What Are You Listening To? - Tiggi - 22-07-2011 ![]() On the laptop. A Hip Hop "classic" from 1994. This is an expanded 10th anniversary version. Much the same as with the Wu-Tang Clan album above, this isn't something I can really relate to. That's fine. There's an audience for it, of which I'm not part. This might be true for the majority of Hip Hop ?! AllMusic 5/5 stars. What Are You Listening To? - Tiggi - 23-07-2011 ![]() My newly-arrived copy on shiny silver disc. Mine has the grey background cover shot ?! On the hi-fi, at suitable volume, this is a sumptuous piece of work. Rihanna's voice is centre-stage, and just about everywhere else on the stage. Her backing vox, harmonies, and multi-tracks are used extensively, to great effect. Many will criticise her music, maybe with justification, but I really enjoyed this, and the quality of the recording/engineering makes for a fascinating listen. I embrace Rihanna (in my dreams...). What Are You Listening To? - Tiggi - 24-07-2011 ![]() Amy's second, from 2006. Jazzy Soul album. That she wrote and recorded this as a 22 year-old is pretty impressive. Some deft evocations of '60s Soul - due in no small part to her production team & musicians - which beg the question "why not listen to '60s originals ??" In my view there are some exceptional albums that demand to be considered in their own right, and this is one of them. Excellent record with some superbly written songs. No doubt her two albums will now sell strongly again. Don't understand why that should be ?! AllMusic 5/5 stars. |
