What Are You Listening To? - SteveO - 01-12-2011

I will listen to it again...as I really didn't care for the "original" stuff at first listen. I love Leon and Elton's Tumbleweed Connection era days !
CRAZY-HORSE Wrote:[Image: 51Vu9aI4vaL._SL500_AA300_.jpg]

ok, had this one since it came out, only just got round to hearing it...heard it twice over the last couple of days to make sure my first impressions were valid.
THIS IS A BRILLIANT ALBUM!...
dont know anything about Leon, but i sure know enough about Elton to make that call,
these songs are as good as anything Elton released back in the 1970s,early 1980s, and to those on his "songs from the west coast" album from several years ago.
this is classic Elton...probably due in no small part to Bernie Taupin once again in his corner...
Brian Wilson does some backing vocals on here as a favour to Leon because Leon was there in the Beach Boy days playing piano on a lot of their tracks,
also, Neil Young makes a surprise appearance singing guest vocals on one track..."gone to shiloh".
not a single dud track on this one at all, just very good to brilliant songs by Elton and his "idol"....
well worth buying, especially if you like the 'classic' Elton years!

Listened to his second album a couple of weeks ago. This is his first. Yes/Moody Blues keyboardist. This is mostly
instrumental so I guess we know how it turns out, especially being synth based. Vocal tracks are ok and even one of
the instrumentals gets a passing grade, being soft piano. Liner notes were probably more interesting than the music
as they go in depth about the creation of the album, down to the individual tracks. Recorded in Brazil, with a lot
of that type rhythm/percussion. After the Yes release of Relayer, the band went off on solo projects. This was
Patricks. No Rick Wakemen here, but similar in style. It is a concept album based around a tower in the jungle that
lures people into it where they are able to experience their fantasies. No I would not have been able to figre that
out from listening to the album. The power of liner notes. Sheds light on the music which only dwells in the
writers mind. Or some bloke on a buzz. The album cracked the Billboard charts at #132. High praise by the critics,
but I'm not a critic. I'm critical but I'm not a critic.

I DO NOT LIKE THIS ALBUM

Worst Track - The Storm

Best Track - Best Years Of Our Lives

Morning will break
When we awake
Oh, I'll - thank you for asking
We are passing through
The best years of our lives

Different vices
Overrun me
When I'm down
And I can't get up
Is someone there
To pick up the pieces?

We have our lives
And in our eyes
Nothing is wasted
For there's no time
To throw away -
Another day -

Finally running
We have the feeling
Nothing will change
Or try to tear us apart
Oh I need you -
Yes I need you -
I need you in the morning

Different vices - they
Try to break me
When I'm up
I just can't get down
And there you are -
You have picked up the pieces

Morning has broken
And as we wake
Oh I thank you for saying
Oh I need you -
Yes I need you
In the best years of our lives

GEORGE HARRISON - All Things Must Pass

[SIZE=2]
Who ever heard of a triple album back in the early 70s? Bizarre to say the least !

This album is very bizarre ! Indeed I can truly say after a few revisits lately that it is a Masterpiece !!!! When I find the time...two hours at least...I will do a justifiable review of this great album and nominate it for a Gold Album Award on MD !....if it already hasn't been ? before I joined MD in May of this year.[SIZE=2]
