^^ I heard most of Blackstar at the time it was released. Try as I might I could not bring myself to say I liked it, and that's how i feel about most of Bowie's songs, with only a handful of exceptions.

Admiring someone for their originality is a different thing from enjoying their music.

Oceansoul Wrote:Just finished David Bowie's song "Lazarus". Quite a sad song. :frown:
RIP David Bowie

to be honest I hated the 'blackstar' single when it came out, hated "lazarus" also....
but in hindsight once you know what the concept is/was 'lazarus' is brilliant, musically lyrically and the video, which is probably the most morbid video
ever made is sublime.

I did buy 'blackstar' the day Bowie died, I was in the cd store and as I was picking up the cd Tem asked if i'd heard the news, which I hadn't...

yes, I didn't like the album when I heard it online the day it was released, but I also disliked his previous effort "the next day",
I kept going back and listening online and one day it clicked with me, its now one of my favourite Bowie albums...

I haven't heard "blackstar" since I purchased it, wanted to wait till the hype over his death subsided, i'll be playing it and posting it in a month or two...

BTW:

loved your Admiring someone for their originality is a different thing from enjoying their music. bob_32....

that's how I feel about some artists also,

Back to Bowie,i have most of his studio albums, some are just too experimental in places as he tried to push musical boundaries or his own pleasure.
generally, there are one or two filler tracks on an album, sometimes none...he wasn't the most consistant artist who ever graced the music scene,
but I think he was an exception 'singles' artist

^^ I always did think the palm tree on that album cover looked as though it had seen better days. Let It Grow" seems an appropriate choice.

I don't mind David Bowie's music. I think the fragility in Bowie's voice and the emotion in Lazarus is what makes it shine. Him knowing his time was coming to an end from his cancer, the lyrics, and the references in the song also shows he put what he had into it. It made me emotional, but certain songs can do that to me for different reasons. Initially, Lazarus didn't seem like it's his best song nor that special until I sat down and felt it, JMO.

Bowie's was a genre bender and music chameleon as he tried different things and didn't stick to one box. I respect that and like some of his music. I like experimental stuff when it's done well, personally.

To me Lazarus was similar to Ashes To Ashes lyrically...
Both were about his 'past, present and future'

And the hints to his demise in the Lazarus video shows Bowie was still the thinking mans artist to the end,
He didn't go out with a whimper, he left us like an exploding supernova...

Yep, I agree with you.

after mentioning Edwyn Collins in another thread I just had to YT his band Orange Juice and
go back to their debut single, brilliant stuff with more than a passing touch of Talking Heads/David Byrne in the song:

From Jonathan Wilson’s Frankie Ray - an album to sink into in the still hours; when all you can hear is the sound of your own heartbeat, there’s an echo on “Sing to You”…
