What Are You Listening To? - Music Head - 10-11-2011

from my library (cd)

Me and Coolio down by the schoolyard. Sorry, couldn't help it. This is a decent album. I surprise myself sometimes.
Admit I'm not a big rap fan, but I think that has devolved over time. This came out back when it was farely fresh.
Hard to get past the hair. but I can. His debut album, and the leadoff single made it a hit. That went to #3 and
the album to #8. Standard gangsta topics throughout, but Coolio just didn't seem as menacing. Maybe it was the
hair. Love that single along with County Lines, Ghetto Cartoon, It Takes A Thief, and Ugly Women. Also five dud
tracks to even it out. Never purchased any other Coolio and the follow up was his best selling. Still at it I
guess, with a release in 2009.

I LIKE THIS ALBUM

Worst Track - Smokin' Stix

Best Track - Fantastic Voyage

Come on y'all let's take a ride
don't you say shit just get inside
It's time to take your ass on another kind of trip
cause you can't have the hop if you don't have the hip
grab your gat with the extra clip and,
close your eyes and hit the switch
We're going to a place where everybody kick it
kick it, kick it, yeah, that's the ticket
ain't no bloodin', ain't no crippin'
ain't no punk-ass nigga's set trippin'
everybody's got a stack and it ain't no crack
and it really don't matter if you're white or black, I
wanna take you there like the Staple Singers
put something in the tank and I know that I can bring ya
If you can't take the heat get yo' ass out the kitchen
we on a mission
Come along and ride on a fantastic voyage
slide slide slippity-slide
with switches on the block in a '65
Come along and ride on a fantastic voyage
slide slide who-ride
no valley low enough for mountain high

I'm tryin' to find a place where I can live my life and
maybe eat some steak with my beans and rice, a
place where my kids can play outside
without livin' in fear of a drive-by
and even if I get away from them drive-by killers
I still got to worry about those snitch-ass niggas
I keep on searchingc and I keep on looking
but niggas are the same from Watts to Brooklyn
I try to keep my faith in my people
but sometimes my people be acting like they evil
you don't understand about runnin' with a gang
cause you don't gang bang, and
you don't have to stand on the corner and slang
cause you got your own thang
you can't help me if you can't help yourself
you better make a left

Come along and ride on a fantastic voyage
slide slide slippity-slide
I do what I do just to survive
Come along and ride on a fantastic voyage
slide slide who-ride
that's why I pack my .45

Life is a bitch and then you die
still tryin' to get a peace of the apple pie
every game ain't the same, cause the game still remains
don't it seem kinda strange, ain't a damn thing change
if you don't work then you don't eat
and only down-ass niggas can ride with me
hop-hop-hop your five quickly down the block
stay sucka-free and keep the busters off your jock
you gotta have heart son, if you wanna go,
watch this sweet chariot swing low
ain't nobody cryin'` ain't nobody dyin'
ain't nobody worried, everybody's tryin
nothin' from nothin' leaves nothin'
if you wanna have something, you better start frontin'
what ya gonna do when the 5 roll by
you better be ready, so you can ride

Come along and ride on a fantastic voyage
slide slide slippity-slide
when you're living in a city it's do or die
Come along and ride on a fantastic voyage
slide slide who-ride
you better be ready when the 5 roll by
just roll along- that's what you do
just roll along- that's right
just roll along- that's what you do
just roll along- that's right
do you want to ride with me, do you want to ride with me
do you want to ride with me,do you want to ride with me
do you want to ride with me, do you want to ride with me
do you want to ride with me,do you want to ride with me

Early Green album, from 1970.

Al has been on my radar for many years, and this is the first opportunity I've had to listen to a CD.

A great Soul singer who didn't seem to make much of an impression this side of the pond. A lovely Soul voice, which is probably a realistic successor to Otis, in combination with some great music make for a strong album which outperforms the AllMusic review in my book.

AllMusic 3/5 stars.

&

Al Green - Al Green Gets Next to You

The following album, from 1971. The two are paired on the first disc of a 2-disc, 4 album set.

The material here is slightly stronger, making for another high quality Soul album.

Mrs Tiggi has fallen for Al's voice...

AllMusic 4+/5 stars.

^^
hoping I'm Still In Love With You is in that set

What Color is Love-Terry Callier

I know say this a lot, but you absolutely have to, need to listen to this esoteric soul masterpiece. Very lenghty, folk-tinged soul gems with brilliant orchestration, understated yet passionate vocals, and lyrics that put Bob Dylan to shame. So yeah, this really really really good

^ A bit of honest advice. I'll take a lot more notice of your opinions when you stop trashing other members' musical tastes.
I can probably learn a lot from you. I guess from previous posts that you're still quite young, so your tastes are very well developed, but until you stop trying to bend the world to your way of thinking, I won't be paying your views much attention.

Discussion about music is what we're all about, so you're entitled to challenge every opinion on here. You just need to do so in a more constructive manner...

^^^ Indeed it is, MH.

The other two albums, from disc 2, both released in 1972.

More sweet, sophisticated Soul, where Al's voice doesn't sound much at all like Otis. His band play inventive. engaging music, but the voice is the star here.

Both great albums.

AllMusic 5/5 stars for each.

only have one Terry Callier single....the one he did with Paul Weller...and only because PW was on it, not a bad song, just cant remember the name of it???

Lyrics that put Dylan to shame????....come on mate!, whether you like him or not, every artist in the world recognises Dylan as the "greatest lyricist/poet" in modern music history

^ That comment wasn't meant as a slam on

I love Dylan. Sure, he may be kind of overrated, but "Blonde on Blonde" is one of my absolute favorite albums, probably somehwere in my top ten

Listen to Terry Calliar's "Dancing Girl" and tell me it isn't at least on par with lyrical masterpieces like "Visions of Johanna"

Have most of Dylan's stuff but 'Infidels' is the one I keep returning to. Pure magic.

The album(Infidels 1984 - bought vinyl copy ...still love it today !) is a little forgotten but it's always been a very favorite one of his for me , J along with Before the Flood !!!!
