I personally think it is Neil Peart, he is what inspired me to start playing the drums three years ago and has been a big influence on the way I play, his beats and patterns amaze me every new song I hear.

Oh agreed but that doesn't mean we can't have some fun with it. Buddy Rich and Vinnie Colaiuta were mentioned and I'll get to them BUT: anybody seeing these Jo Jones clips and trying to tell me drummers aren't musicians has his head firmly ensconced in his anus: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eANTTBvIXmI and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W8L7JZP97X0
Mr. Rich: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UOqr5iyjzZY and tutorial on that 1-handed roll http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k2kxqBM82AA
Mr. Colaiuta: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QHXE9V7ph5k and with 2 other masters http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VUF8aRodecM
And then there's this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zMuA-E--aWU and this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qwkIWnxml3A and finally http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pJeax5GHXbE
Raw technique is all well and good but taste has to be there too; all these gents have it in spades.
