The Stones coined that title themselves(or their roecord company did) in 1971....
they didnt call themselves that previously, why?
because they werent up there with the Beatles

i just dont see anything intelligent in them actually....

for the most part, stupid, simplistic songs with little thought in them...
pretty much a one riff band(like U2 and more recently Coldplay),living off rehashing the same same riff over and over again...

The Rolling Stones don't need defence--their work tells all you want to know, yea or nay. A very special shout-out to Keith Richards--no person has done near as much to keep R'n'B as a vital force, not least by sponsoring those artists from the Golden Era needing help or continued public approval. And he didn't need falling out of a palm tree in Fiji to come to this shadow career. I'm in his debt just for the Chuck Berry project. Over and out.

i agree about Keith Richards...his whole lifestyle personifies all that is rebelious about "rock and roll", his whole image is "real", Mr.Rock-and-roll" if you will....

anyway...
im not commenting on this topic anymore, you guys know where i stand on the Rolling Stones......

and if anyone bothered to read my "my singles" thread you would all know i own probalby twenty or so of their singles on vinyl....
i also own a few of their albums album...

i just find the hype of them overrated as great musicians or even as a great vocalist...
but they have influenced probably as many artists over the decades as Elvis or Beatles...so you cant knock them for that.

over and out!!!!!

"i just find the hype of them overrated as great musicians or even as a great vocalist..." I really have never heard of them being described as per your quote Crazy mate !

I doubt there is a formula for R&R success. We never really know why there are guys playing in bars in East Wa Pee Pee who show twice the talent of many of those who've made it.

And then it's easy to see why some deserve the rep they have.

The Beatles never really grabbed me, especially after Rubber Soul, but The Stones did. Blues-based vs. Pop-based I guess. A lot of those British Invasion bands sucked the big bamboo, Freddy and the Dreamers .. Yuck!

The Stones grabbed the bad boy crowd. But in reality quite possibly Keith was the only real bad boy. The rest either died or got married and bought castles in the English countryside.

Makes ya scratch your head when considering all the dudes who have more money than guys like, Stevie Wonder, Paul Simon, etc. Dylan is the one I think is over-rated.

i could go on about Bob Dylan all day but i'll keep it short and concise....

Dylan is ,indeed, the most overrated performer i have ever seen...he has never put on a good show i have seen...but,
as a lyricist few can touch his wordplay...
he has written some of the most poignant and prophecised lyrics ever put to paper by a musician and few have ever mastered the woven stories in his songs.

and as he has always said "im a poet, not a singer"....

good post "modeeper"...well constructed.

i like the bit about some great bands with lots of talent have never made it but others with less talent have made it....

its called "right place, right time" IMO....

when Paul McCartney was recording "band on the run" in Lagos in '73 he went to a little shanty bar and says he saw "the best gig i have ever seen,by the best musicians i have ever seen".

i guess a little band in a stupid bar in Lagos were/are never going to be discovered by the "world's impressarios", but they obviously enjoyed what they were doing and hopefully made a living out of their music.
