Bands you don't understand?! - synystergates17 - 29-07-2008 JonG Wrote:What don't you understand about the above bands? Remember, its not bands you don't like its what you don't understand. I don't think there's much to get about the above bands, except for Mastodon. Or is it you don't understand why others like them?my friends like the same music as me and they also like the bands i listed, i just never figured out why they would, i have nothing against them though. Bands you don't understand?! - kvincent5555 - 02-04-2009 Certain artists commonly thought of as overrated are figureheads for group identification. So-called "heartland" artists like Bruce and John Mellonhead speak to common, folksy things like hanging out in familiar places, blue-collar hardship, attachment to home state, home town, etc. The Dead are figureheads for the hippies; the Clash for punks. If you want to make big bucks in the music business, find a large flock of sheep and sing to them in their language. That's not to say that the above bands are not good, sincere, or that all of their fans are sheep, but to understand scale of their appeal, I think you have to look beyond their music and to their image, what they represent on an emotional level, etc. As for any that I'm totally clueless about within the rock category (Don't get me started on pop.), I guess I'd have to say Van Morrison. Apart from Brown Eyed Girl, I find his songs very boring. He doesn't have a strong enough image to be a figurehead. He's just sort of been there all these years, making albums here and there, and putting me to sleep. Bands you don't understand?! - rocknrollchick - 03-04-2009 The only one I could really say anything regarding would have to be Tool, and I wouldn't even say that they are very hyped. If your close relations do not listen to Tool then you have probably never heard them. They do have a very unique and non-commercial sound which tends to have a "love it or hate it" appeal. They're just rather different which some people really enjoy and others can't stand..... oh and I don't know why others bands are so big but I must say Queens of the Stone Age are starting to grow on me. Just saying.
Bands you don't understand?! - kvincent5555 - 03-04-2009 I was surprised to see Tool show up more than once here. My guess is that their songs are more hypnotic and groove-oriented. They lack the hooks, riffs, structure, and guitar acrobatics one would usually expect in metal and rock songs. If you're used to banging your head or dancing when your song comes on, it's hard to see their appeal. Bands you don't understand?! - markyyy - 06-04-2009 Mine is very general, because I have a cynical outlook on music today. But for me, most modern music is overhyped. Fall Out Boy, as was on your list, is just one of plenty of examples in the mainstream. As for your original list, a few of the bands you named are considered so great because of the influence, and not necessarily the play. Deep Purple's an example, in that they really inspired A LOT of metal in the late 70s and early 80s. The Stones inspired what followed them, and Jimi Hendrix inspired so many guitarists to really put their heart and soul into their instrument. I guess if I had to make a list from what I do listen to, it would be: 1. Metallica, although I listen to them a lot. They're fairly overrated, but I give them credit. 2. Led Zeppelin, but specifically Led Zeppelin IV. The album with Stairway. It's a great album from top to bottom. Just overplayed, and therefore overappreciated. 3. Nirvana. Just don't see what people like about them. 4. The Beatles. Same as Nirvana, although I probably just haven't given them enough of a shot.. I listen to both of those.. a lot. I guess with a lot of bands, their music is enjoyed by A LOT of people. So I guess you can just expect a lot of hype about them! Here is my top 10 list of such bands/artists. Yeah, I would agree that a lot of those artists are overhyped, particularly the Rolling Stones. I also think that some of the above artists are quite original and deserve the hype. I think the most overhyped artists ever are Led Zeppelin and Nirvana, personally. Bands you don't understand?! - jayburd - 29-04-2009 #1 is definitely Tool. I really wish people would stop asking me to give them another chance. I HAVE! I don't like 'em. The Mars Volta is another band I can't get into. And don't even get me started on Korn... Bands you don't understand?! - rocknrollchick - 03-05-2009 I really don't get why there is such an anti-tool movement going on here. Gosh. I don't think they're overhyped at all. I didn't even hear about them until last year. Even still, if I mention them in conversation the majority of people haven't ever heard anything by them. I personally like them, but Tool is one of those bands that I have to be in a "Tool" mood to listen to, ya know? Bands you don't understand?! - trbc08 - 03-05-2009 Tool are pretty popular. All of their albums have been at least a platinum and Ãnema was a triple platinum. Also, when I went to see them on tour, they played like three or four shows in Florida alone and all of them sold well. The Georgia show was sold out before I could even get tickets. Just because they aren't played much on the radio doesn't mean they're not popular... In fact, some places play them on the radio a lot. I used to like Tool; I think they're grossly overrated. |
