What is 'house' music? - SteveO - 06-05-2012 I can appreciate you " not caring " ... I know what you mean ! Keef Rob Wrote:Well, it's singles. Albums exist and there's quite a few of them but for me this music works best with the remixes and a DJ added, and most albums are mixed by the DJ or are comps. I don't feel I've actually heard a song until I've heard a few remixes in context. The way I got into it was by DJ mix tapes because they were given away as promos, so that's how I heard stuff back in the cassette days. Typically they wouldn't include tracklists so you didn't know what you were hearing. Rock people don't seem to be able to enjoy it on that level -- they have to know which album, presumably to validate it somehow, and all the extras about the performers. I'm more interested in the actual music and largely don't care what the title or project name or performer is for what I'm hearing unless I need a reference to put in my portable. What is 'house' music? - pachubatinath - 08-05-2012 I agree with the tension/release and timbral development -these are the rules that explain why my electronic dance music tastes span so many different genres. Just been listening to some Bassline House (a Northern English sub-genre destroying dancefloors currently) in clubs and at the gym and the 'release' of the bass drop is really making me crazy at the moment (cue Jungle-screw face) while supplying a good 4/4 fix. You mean the donk? I can't tell you how many people I know who hate the donk but I've got a soft spot for it. Jungle makes me sway. I guess everyone's got their own way of feeling it but in the 90's my friends were thoroughly entertained by getting me wigged out somehow and watching my own special "jungle dance" which consisted of bobbing and weaving along with the mad drums. What is 'house' music? - PennyLane - 26-05-2012 Whenever I am asked that question I simply reply with " what they play at clubs" or more recently " what they play on the Jersey Shore". Either way... I am not a fan. Hmm, I'd best be moving on then, because many of the comments in this one thread from people who do not listen to house strike me as near-slags. Maybe I'll see you around. |
