Jerome Wrote:Oh I agree, he probably is only remembered for Tubular Bells and you are probably right to leave him off the list. Incidentally, if you get the chance try his 'Songs of Distant Earth'. An album that sold very poorly, but the one I think is his best work ever. 'Crises' is another beauty. I am not too impressed with his latest offering 'Music of the Spheres'. Believe he is putting a new one together at the moment.

Your lists are pretty accurate Frankie. i am very pleased to see OPETH on the 2000 list!..what a great band eh?

I would have added King Crimson (a group that bridged the 60s and 70s), John Lennon in the seventies to the extent that he was controversial and continued to write decent songs, and Shania Twain in the nineties...the number one selling artist for that decade that probably influenced countless women who are now pop stars or artists!

Neil Young has to be there for the 60s/70s for sure as well as Johnny Cash!...and no one can deny the impact of Paul Weller for the bands he created and his many musical styles!...I would even add AC/DC for their sheer influence on all those hard rock guitarists out there and massive overall popularity in general!

Without a doubt - he also made some really crap records. It's very easy to carry on about the significance of 'art' and get lost in the mumbo-jumbo, but he did create a couple of really influential albums within the realm of ambient music. I have quite a few of his albums but the only ones I rate are 'Apollo - Atmospheres & Soundtracks' - a superb piece of work, 'Music for Films' which is unique if not quite brilliant, and 'The Plateaux of Mirror' with Harold Budd, which in a bizarre way does not really go anywhere but is absolutely perfect if you are in the right frame of mind. His later albums I do not care much for.

Fripp & Eno's ' Evening Star' is ....stellar work ! , and parts oif their 'No Pussyfooting' are also great .He did a cd with John Cale that has a couple of gems on it. Produced early U2 work, worked with David Byrne on his 'Catherine Wheel' , and other work with other artists. so yeah, he was influential. To think he wasn't doesn't seem fair or accurate . Within the context of 'most' influential , probably a different story , but within the context of people I think of as important , Brian Eno is important. 
 
Making crap music is something everybody does, according to my ears. Even my main man Bill Nelson has done a ton of work I can't listen to at all . As with everyone, it's those needles in the haystacks that make it all worthwhile. 
 
Also, lists like this are often more about what's popular, what's sold the most, and I've never had a whole lot of alignment with 
what's the most popular thing going on, except maybe back in the early 70's with rock . 'Influential' doesn't necessarily translate to 'important' in my world . There's no place for Simon Posford , Steve Morse , Bill Nelson, David Byrne , Frank Zappa , Curve , Fripp , Ott , Deuter, Kitaro, or a bunch of others I could name , in a list of the popularly influential, but they are important pieces of my puzzle .
