System of a Down is awesome I agree, but they are a bit more spontanious than Judas Priest or Metallica. Metallica has their own channel on aolradio.com with all Metallica if you want to try them.

Tool are so metal yeah...

Who the hell compares SOAD to Priest. I mean, seriously. lol...

So, I'll list some audiolicious bands for you guys. I'll leave out the usual Heavy Metal suspects such as Maiden/Priest/Sabbath because the hoi polloi knows them anyway.

Black Metal:
Krallice
Agalloch
Wolves in the Throne room
Carpathian Forest
Of course the classics such as Gorgoroth, Burzum, Mayhem or Dissection (with the latter one being in fact a combination of Black and Death Metal. Don't listen to Dissection's last album Reinkaos...)

Death Metal:
Cannibal Corpse (Brutal Death Metal)
Nile (Brutal Death Metal)
Bloodbath
Necrophobic (typical scandinavian Death Metal)
Entombed (also Death n Roll)
Classics again: Morbid Angel, Death, Possessed ...

Thrash Metal:
Sepultura (only Max Cavalera era)
Fear Factory (a bit Industrial/Groove/Death Metal)
Soulfly
Classics: Slayer, Exodus (Metallica and Megadeth suck donkey balls)...

Doom Metal:
Ahab (Nautic Funeral Doom)
Sunn O))) (Drone Doom)
Boris (Stoner/Drone Doom)
Earth (Drone Doom)
Ascend (Drone Doom)
Classics: Paradise Lost (Death Doom)...

Stay away from Power Metal, Metalcore/Nu Metal, Symphonic Metal bands like Nightwish or other ridiculously pop-punkish wannabe-metal-shit.

Grindcore's a pretty cool genre too. It's a combination of Death Metal, Thrash Metal, Hardcore/Crust, Noise ...
In case this has aroused your interest I'll list some good bands of this genre as well.

System of a Down is only more spontaneous because they and almost every other "metal" (lol) band of the mid to late 90's ripped off Mr. Bungle in some way, a band far more spontaneous than System of a Down could ever hope of being.

I want to check out Krallice...

I totally disagree, especially with the definiton of "wannabe-metal-shit". If you really think thrash-grindcore-etc is "the only tr00 metal" I think you have a verry narrow view on metal.

I'm not saying I like Nightwish, but I just generally disagree on a very narrow definiton of metal. For example, power metal is in my opinion much closer to the "early" definitons of metal than doom metal.

And grindcore - yack. I really like to be able to hear the lyrics. But perhaps I am oldfashioned...

I have never said that I think thrash-grindcore-etc is "the only tr00 metal". Otherwise I wouldn't have listed Black/Death/Doom Metal. Even the NWOBHM educed some good bands.

I'm just telling you that bands like Dragonforce or Nightwish or Hammerfall or Bullet for My Valetine and whatnot are pretty shite and not worth listening to.

Egh... Everytime I hear someone say something like "I really like to be able to hear the lyrics" as a reason for disliking grindcore, I die a little inside.

The only TRUE metal band is Man O War, anyway.

Sometimes power metal can be fun in a camp sort of way. That is if Grim Reaper's See You in Hell is an example of power metal.

Told you I am old fashioned! Smile

Well, some people do not care for the lyrics but for me they are a part of the whole experience. No reason to die for
It just makes me angry if I listen to someone torturing his/her throat for 3 minutes.

I'm with you MetalMamma. I'm pretty old fashioned myself. I am no metal head (I'm more a straight up rock n' roll type chick) but there is a lot of metal out there I do enjoy. Lyrics are important to me, and something about listening to someone torture their throat for 3 minutes just annoys the hell out of me and only gives me a headache.
