IMHO , straight ahead pure soul and r n' b have become second fiddles so to speak to hip hop and rap..as you have basically stated MH !

God Loves Ugly-Atmosphere
Hip hop with self depricating lyrics? Yes, I know it seems weird, but it's great. I know a lot of hip hop is based off of boastfullness, so it seems weird, but it's definitely refreshing to get something liek this. You have to appreciate lyrics so brutally, and often times embarassingly, honest. Plus, it checks out on flow and beats, so a win over all

Florida brothers and sisters group that was around for about 5 minutes in the early seventies. Four siblings as the
cover shows, but why does one of the sisters not get equal billing? That don't seem right. Poor Billie Jo. Two gold
singles from this debut album, Treat Her Like A Lady (#3) and Too Late To Turn Back Now (#2). Both love tracks and the only ones. The album made #29, but was put together well after that first single. All original tunes other than Al Green's Let's Stay Together which belongs to Al. The group had one more album before splitting in 1976 after brother Cornelius decided to join a Hebrew sect and passed away in 1991. Brother Eddie became a pastor and currently performs faith based music. Sister Rose still performs with gospel jazz groups in Florida. Sister Billie Joe was never heard from again. Rumor has it she was last seen contemplating a jump off the Talahatchee bridge.

JOHN FARNHAM "33 1/3" cd,2000.
umpteenth album by this Aussie rock/pop icon since his debut in 1967...
he has gone from singing little lighthearted ditty's,through straight pop,ballads,rock, occasional lead vocalist with Little River Band,back solo again...never ending tours downunder,selling out major stadiums continuingly over his 45 yr career...all this from a country with a population of around 30million...
anyway,
this album was a covers album of pretty obscure soul songs that he grew up with complete with authentic sounding soul sounds, not sure if the soul thing suits his vocals perfectly, but its still an ok listen....
not much great on here, but neither is there much to bitch about except a lot of the songs sound similar and get a bit boring to listen to thus the "*" ratings in the second half of the album.
can only find a couple of tracks available to link for this one...thankfully they are my favourites!

THE BLACK EYED PEAS "monkey business" cd,2005. UK #4, US #2, AU #1.
fourth album by BEP's, and their second with Fergie in the band.
i like these guys a lot, i think they*and Outcast) brought an ounce of freshness to a stagnant and boring hip hop/rap/r&b genre...and also kept the foul language which is part and parcel of that genre out of it, making them a more "family orientated" hip hop group...nothing obscene here at all, just feel good music with awesome beats!.
IMO Will.I.Am is a modern writing/playing genius...he can play just about any instrument,writes all the songs,produces..you name it, he's done it and he is very good at it!
surprisingly though, the worst track on here is the abysmal "my humps" which also happened to be the biggest selling single here reaching #3 in both US/UK and embarrassingly reaching #1 here in Australia with the chorus line of "my humps, my humps, my lovely lady bumps"...cringeworthy stuff indeed, but again Will.I.Am makes it instantly catchy for radio play and thus, he has a hit single!
we also have guest appearances on here from Justin Timberlake(my style), Jack Johnson(gone going), James Brown (they dont want music) and for the biggest surprise of all....Sting in a rewrite of his "englishman in new york" retitled "union", which is very very good IMO
although the BEP's had four smash hits off this one, and this became their biggest selling album to date, they failed to hit the #1 position in both the US/UK with the album and/or the singles released fro it, they did however score two #1 hits here in Australia and of course the album hit #1 here also...
the pro's at allmusic only score this one a converted 1.5 on their website, i however love this album immensely and cant see what exactly is that bad with it, neither can Dani who loves this one also!
