What Are You Listening To? - Quaalude - 05-11-2012

I own their album from (2007) Super Hits. The only song that I can actually tolerate listening to by them recently is Play The Game Tonight. Kansas is really one of the only "true" (U.S.) progressive rock band from the 70s PR era. Most of the mega prog. bands from that particular era are either from the UK or Canada (Rush). Its not that I don't respect what Kansas has accomplished as a band and their music. I really cant explain it, I guess that their music just doesn't do anything for me anymore. Confusedmile:

I agree with your comment on Annie Haslam, Music Head . I have a vinyl copy also and I must revisit it!

....then back over to the vinyl box till the weekend.
Annie Haslam has to be one of the best female vocalists of the time for me. Chamber rock is what they called it. A
perfect blend of classical and rock music is what I call it. Renaissance never had much of a following. A little
Bigger in the UK I guess, but even there the best chart showing for an album was a #35 with A Song For All Seasons.
Not sure where I picked up on them. This is their seventh album which didn't even chart in the UK and a weak #46
here. Only five tracks on the whole album with a 13 minute opener being my favorite. Annie makes it work. Showing
two different covers for US and UK releases. I like mine better. The group had constant lineup changes but is still
active with Annie and Michael Dunford the only original members. The is the bands lowest rated album on allmusic,
but I still like it.

These guys are just so weird. First time I saw them was doing something from Kimono My House. Still my favorite
Sparks album. This one not quite as good, but it's up there. Followed them for a long time and they are still
kicking, though now they are more into the techno/dance scene. Another group that was one of my favorites, yet never
caught on. This is the groups fifth album and it could only manage a #169 chart showing here. The UK seemed to liked
them more with a #18 there. Get In The Swing and Looks, Looks, Looks were singles but neither fared that well. Love
three tracks and like everything else. The Mael brothers almost always deliver for me. Watching the deadpan look of
Russell was almost as enjoyable as the music.

FOXY SHAZAM - The Church of Rock and Roll (released on my daughter's birthday, 24 January 2012)

After repeated listenings this is one of those rare albums in which I like all the tracks ! Foxy Shazam's fourth studio album The Church of Rock and Roll is an absolute gem ! There's everything on here...glam rock, soul, hard rock, folk rock, retro rock and even a radio single with the DJ commenting after the track is over. The six man band from Cincinnati, Ohio have struck gold with this one ! I think most members here at MD will love this record !

from my library (cd)

A slight decline from the previous Blood On The Tracks for me, but still a love album. Bob's seventeenth
album featuring the Rolling Thunder Revue lineup and backing vocals by Ronee Blakely and Emmylou Harris.
Most songs co-written with Jaques Levy who I never heard of again. Leads off with Bob's controversial
defense of Rubin "Hurricane" Carter who was convicted of a murder that occurred during a robbery in 1967.
Serving almost 20 years of his life conviction he was released on an appeal in 1985. Bob also drew heat
over the song Joey, which was seen as glorifying the life of gangster Joey Gallo. Both of those are love
tracks but my favorite is Sara, which just seems so personal it hurts. Written about his then wife who
would file for divorce about a year after this album was released. The album went straight to #1 in the US
and Australia, and #3 in the UK. Hurricane, in an abbreviated version was released as a single along with
Mozambique, which is my least favorite track. As usual, the lack of youtube clips is mystifying.
