VARIOUS ARTISTS "mojo presents...heavy soul" cd,2010.
essentially a freebie that was given away with one of the 2010 issues of british music magazine "mojo"...
the cover is an almost carbon copy of Paul Weller's 1997 album "heavy soul",which in return was a carbon copy of an old japanese issue of an album cover by Traffic.
these fifteen tracks here, were hand-picked by Paul Weller for Mojo as a collection of funk/soul tracks that influenced Weller throughout his career.
i had never heard of a lot of these artists nor the songs which is the good thing about these sorts of albums,in fact the only track i own outside of this collection is Curtis Mayfield's "freddie's dead" from a double Mayfield anthology set.
also good to now have the original Aaron Neville version of "hercules" of which i only have the Weller version,Aaron's version is ok i guess, as i Weller's, but thats about it, i just dont think that is a great song at all.
some real good stuff on here, some ok tracks and some downright aweful tracks IMO, but when its free with a magazine i was buying anyway.
I LIKE THIS ALBUM

Uptown Saturday Night-Camp Lo
This album is just cool in every way. It's very 90s, but it helps the vibe of it all

LLOYD "king of hearts"
fourth album by this R&B artist...God only know how he got to four albums if the other three are like this one!
bought this one purely on the strength of his "decication to my ex" single which i thought was real good soul music, alas, seven of the tracks are pure crap-rap IMO, only the one i mentioned and the last five on the album are genuinely good songs, with only that Dedication one and "angel" scoring full marks...just wish this guy would stay away from rap and do more soulful sounds as he's not bad when he does that.
the allmusic pro's give this one a converted 2.7...i think they need their ears cleaned out if they really think this one is that good...i mean thats around a CCR best of set score, and Lloyd aint no way in the same league as those guys!
I DO NOT LIKE THIS ALBUM
worst track: pick any one of at least seven of them

DRAPHT "the life of riley" cd,2011. #1 AU.
had only heard this guys name and read a few articles on him before i won this one in January as part of the prize for picking the correct top 5 singles on the ARIA FB page...
anyways,
this is apparently his fourth album.
Drapht (pronounced "draft") is a white rapper born, raised and still lives here in Perth..
not a bad rap album IMO, the normal ho's,whores,bitches,niggaz,mautha-f#ckers etc etc words are pretty non existant on this one, but as much as i think he is not a profficient rapper and his music is not that great, he does manage some fine story-telling in his songs...sort of like that UK dude Plan-B.
i would have assumed that the title of the album would tell the story of a guy named Riley, but it does not appear so.
overall, an ok album for a freebie, but obviously not in the same league as Eminem..

WILSON PICKETT "the exciting wilson pickett" cd, 1966.
Wilson's second album...and another great album from the 1960s soul maestro(all these so-called new r+b/soul artists should listen to this guy before they call themselves soul..because they obviously dont know what real soul music is all about and how it should sound IMO!)
quite simply how can you go wrong with an album that contains "land of 1000 dances", "634-5789" and "midnight hour"...all three are true soul classics, and theres several more on here that are equal to these three, with the remainder not too far behind them!...but then again im biased as Wilson is "the king of soul" IMO...Otis and James Brown come mighty close, but WP pips them at the post for pure consistancy!...forget that crappy "hey jude" cover he did in 1969, that one dont count!
this and his debut album "in the midnight hour" are must haves in any serious music collectors collection of soul music from the 1960s...
on the Midnight Hour link there are some added commentry comments from Steve Cropper and Sting...
I LOVE THIS ALBUM
