What Are You Listening To? - Jerome - 26-03-2013

If you are looking to buy a Genesis album, their live 'Seconds Out' is a masterpiece. One of the top 5 live albums I own. A word of warning though - it is prog rock to the nth degree.

These guys surely qualify as a one hit wonder, and it's not on this album. The worst part of
this post is, like CH said, having to listen to parts of the songs again in order to post them
here. I hear ya mate. This is the Michigan bands debut album and I can't believe they got a
follow up. Sounds like a bad garage band. Can't decide which is worse here, the originals (Do
The Bosco) or the covers (Rockin' Robin). Guess I'll go for the cover as I don't much care for
the original of that song either. The butchering of Rick Nelsons Hello Mary Lou was pretty hard
to take also. Didn't know that was written by Gene Pitney. CCR does a good cover of that.
The group lasted for 9 years and 7 albums. They hit it big in '73 with Smokin' In The Boys Room,
then it was the slide, rightfully so, at least based on this album.

I like the early genesis with peter gabriel

Hittin from the new stack. Another bargain from the discount bin for $5. Not real thrilled but I had no Genesis on cd. Any compilation with 18 tracks should score higher. Four love tracks and four do not like. Pulled from eight albums, dating from 1973 to 1997, but half of those tracks are from two albums that are not among my favorites, Invisible Touch and We Can't Dance. Only one track with Peter, from Selling England By The Pound. Since this release that I have, the album has been reissued as a 2-cd set, with another 17 tracks. The bummer on my set, in addition to the tracks I don't like, is a reworking of The Carpet Crawlers that is not nearly as good as the original. Why did they do that? The original would get a love score.

record store I managed back in the late 70's was called Chapter 3 Records
The owner was a fan of Manfred Mann.

Another surprise final score for me here. I have a few Melissa's and I must have back tracked
to pick this one up because nothing on it stands out. This is her debut album. Melissa reminded
me of Bonnie Raitt back then, nice bluesy voice. She was discovered in a Long Beach night club
and had a choice of several majors to go with. When you have five labels bidding for your
talent at least the ante gets upped. Island Records won that first battle. Four singles from
the album with only Similar Features hitting the lower edge of the Hot 100 chart. The album
managed a #22 though, which may have carved her niche as an album artist. Albums seem to have
consistently charted higher than her singles. I see Australia took this all the way to #3. They
were on board early, as it would e a few albums before she would reach that level of success in
the states. This comes out rather low for me but allmusic loves it.

Did her debut yesterday and wanted to follow up while it was fresh. This is her sophomore
effort and I can't say there's much difference. Only two tracks I don't like on this one,
compared to yesterdays four, so I guess we're making progress, moving this one into the like
Category. Still nothing I love. I still get the Bonnie Raitt comparison, others say Janis.
Showing Bono as playing harmonica on the album but not sure where. Sales were about the same as
for the first album, hitting #22 here and top 10 in Canada and Australia. Three singles, of
which my fav of No Souvenirs was the only one to make a showing.

Fifth studio album and the follow up to the surprisingly successful Destroyer, my favorite Kiss
album. They included another ballad on this one, patented after the beautiful Beth from that
previous album, we have the beautiful Hard Luck Woman. Both songs are my favorites. One harder
love track for me from this one is Ladies Room. Too bad there are two do not like tracks to go
with the two love, making this just an ok album. While listening to Hard Luck Woman, I kept
thinkin' Rod Stewart. The while doing this review, I read where Paul Stanley wrote this and
wanted it to be sung by Rod Stewart. That's just freaky. Anyway Peter Criss ended up singing it
after Gene Simmons insistence. Now I wanna know what Ace thought. The song didn't match the
success of Beth, but got the boys another top 20 hit. Calling Dr. Love was another hit, taking
this album to #11 on the US chart.
