JOHN FARNHAM "help" b/w "back to the backwoods" 1980
its not often that i say a cover is better than the original but this four minute ballad of the Beatles song beats their version by a counrty mile!, this is the definitive version of "help" IMO...again, this song would be in my top ten tracks from the 1980s without a doubt!
"b" side isnt much IMO, a real dissapoining effort from Johnny!
single peaked at #8 here, should have been #1 all over the world but wasnt released over yonder!

PAUL McCARTNEY "all my trials-ep" 1990
time for another 12" single,
this one was a limited editon single, not released on 7" nor cd single, in fact the lead off track "all my trials" cannot be found on cd at all!
so, four live tracks apparently...i wouldnt know what they sound like because my copy is still factory sealed...its a collectors item that now sells on ebay
for between $50-$150US.
i am hearing the lead off track for the first time on youtube right now, its not bad, the other three live tracks are listed below also, i cannot rate those versions and will not unless i find the live versions on youtube..
"ep" didnt chart here because it wasnt released here, just had a short limited edition run in the UK with only a few thousand copies made on 12" vinyl..

another Macca 12" single...ive already posted the 7" one here, but now its time for the big single...
love the "once upon a long ago" track, like "back on my feet" which was co-written with Elvis Costello, but only bought this because the two covers on the "b' side
were tracks that didnt make it onto his "choba b cccp-the russian album" from the same year, but made it onto the cd of that album when released later...
single failed to chart here but did get to the top5 in the UK..

John's version is somewhat a different take altogether. I still love the Beatles' original, Crazy mate!

i love the Beatles version also mate...just think that Farnham takes the song to even greater heights than a 2.5minute pop song...
i also saw an interview with Macca when he toured here back in around 1993 and someone played him the ballad version and he said "that is the best version of one of our songs that i have heard,infact its probably better than ours"
high praise indeed, from a Beatle IMO...

HOWARD JONES "no one is to blame" b/w "the chase" 1986
love this "a" side, one of the best songs of that decade IMO...
love the lyrics,similar in vein to Alanis Morrissette's "ironic" but written a decade prior to that one...
"b" side is a stupid ass synth pop instrumental...
single only got to #9 here, deserved much higher IMO, but who am i to say whats right or wrong???

MADNESS "wings of a dove" b/w "behind the 8ball" 1983
"a' side is one of my favourite tracks by these guys...
uplifting lyrics, topped off with a Gospel Choir, great stuff...
"b" side is a typically crappy "b' side by these guys....
single only reached #72 here and was one of their last top10 hits in the UK

debut single by these guys...
they used to call this punk..i dont, its simple aggressive alt rock from 1977 London...
both sides are okay, nothing special...

superb crappy cover of the Bread song, impossible to beat their version anyway, but Georges vocals and reggae beats just dont do it justice,
i obviously liked it back in the day, but i dont like it now...
"b' side is another piece of George "b' side rubbish...

GEORGE HARRISON "all those years ago" b/w "writing on the wall" 1981
the "a' side was actually written a couple of years prior to its release....
"after John Lennon died,Harrison re-wrote the lyrics, hauled in Paul and Ringo to drum and play bass and the rest is history...
anyway, a great song IMO, both lyrically and musically...
"b' side is a track off the "somewhere in england", its a good track also...

i cant remember which movie the "a" side was from but it was from a movie soundtrack...
produced by Jeff Lynne and has his distinct sound throughout...
"b' side is a track taken from his very good "cloud nine" album, also produced by Jeff Lynne...
