Pick an album you feel is overrated and underrated from the last 5 decades - gryphon - 16-09-2011

I'm going to push the boat out here and say that maybe one of the best album every recorded was Tubular Bells..........................Still fresh after some 38 years available as at least three versions and with two squeals and a possible initiator of a genre ......................................Confusedcared:Confusedcared::rain::Wink:

I agree with that. The main problem about Tubular Bells and Mike Oldfield is that everybody know only this album. If you only knew...this was only the beginning. He released other albums that are in my opinion equal and/or greater than Tubular Bells. There was a huge hype with Tubular Bells and the movie exorcist. But the artist continued to be great. Just try Ommadawn, you'll see.

I agree 100% - and 'The Songs of Distant Earth' is even better. In fact I like all his albums except 'Heaven's Open' which somehow just does not fit in with the rest of his work. Crises is another classic and one which funnily enough uses the classic TB piano motif in a disguised form.

My memories of my first hearing of Tubular Bells - Stoned on marijuana, in a wooden log cabin on the edge of the Namib Desert in a small town called Oranjemeund with a Zulu friend Tsepo Skwambane (a Hendrix Fan). We played this over and over - could not get enough of it. And this album has not aged at all. Still sounds original to me. Maybe the weed hasn't worn off yet!
