I'm a huge fan of old Reggae, and yeah Bob Marley was great, but was he really that inspiring alone?
There were a whole bunch of great artists with similar style as him evolving at the same time. Of Course he participated in creating a certain sound of Reggae, but he definately wasn't alone doing it, and it's not "his" sound.
If you ask me, Lee Perry was a lot more influental, as he with The Upsetters and King Tubby introduced a very typical sound of Dub-Reggae in the 70's and inspired artists such as Junior Murvin, Augustus Pablo, The Congos etc.
Also, where is Soundgarden?
Also, The White Stripes are incredible, but it's not a new sound influenting others, that sound has already been heard in millions of garages and underground rockbars for a long time before them.

3 points I'll make: 1) Yes the Rolling Stones were not innovators and sound pretty much the same these 50 years--that's exactly the point with them. A whole bunch of different-sounding bands included Blues or Blues-elements to their music as a result. And you could dance to their music.; 2) The Supremes were a molded-and-shaped-by-others, manufactured concoction of Berry Gordy, Jr. and Motown, only a spear-point of a movement, a representative example and thus not so important in what they did; 3) not to include the Beach Boys and the immense talent of Brian Wilson is a shame and a sin. Their music is studied and shapes others to this day. Pet Sounds anyone?
I agree with others in that music quality has slipped badly through the decades but I can't say exactly why--Corporate Music having a death grip? Paucity of ideas by "musicians" who are really grubby money- and trend-chasers? Extreme individuation of categories and listeners so there is less and less common ground and what common ground there is is machine-made crapola? Speculation is rife, ripe and endless.
