went to the cinema this afternoon:

[Image: 220px-The_Lady_in_the_Van_film_poster.jpg]

"the lady in the van"

stars Maggie Smith as the lady in the van...
the true story of a lady in a van who moved into a playwright's driveway in Camden,London and lived out of her van for
fifteen years...
no one knows where she came from or who she is.
the story is the developing relationship between the playwright and the lady over those fifteen years...

superb performance by Maggie Smith in her role, she deserves an Oscar for her role.

a great movie about human relationships and compassion.

4/5 from me.

well worth watching for her acting alone!

Justified season IV

the cat and mouse games between Boyd Crowder, The Dixie Mafia, Limehouse, the Detroit gangsters and Deputy Marshall Raylan Givens continues...
lots of double dealing, lots of back stabbing and plenty of humour in the backwoods of Kentucky in Harlan County...

up there with the third season for me: 4/5

next up: season V.

JUSTIFIED season V

started off pretty slow, first two episodes were a bit boring...
mainly because of the introduction of new characters...the Miami Crowe's, the Mexican heroin cartel and the full Deroit mafia,
rom then on it picked up...
lots of twists and turns...
looks like Harlan County's Boyd Crowder's world is about to come tumbling down around him in season VI (we'll have to wait and see!)...
huge twist at the end with Deputy Marshall Givens and Boyd Crowder's partner Ava Crowder, cant wait to see how this one plays out!

rating: 4/5

JUSTIFIED: season VI:
the final season of the series...

the Kentucky Marshall's service is in hot pursuit of Boyd and Ava Crowder...
the FBI have issued an arrest warrant for Marshall Givens also,
in this explosive final season...

a couple o boring episodes in this one...
a few more questions answered from earlier episodes and series'...
more humour in this one than previous series, more bloodshed also...
superb finale which sums up the relationship between Boyd Crowder and Marshall
Raylan Givens perfectly.

overall, not as good as the previous five series but still passable 3/5

The Martian, which I now wish I’d seen on the big screen, or IMAX. It’s based on the book, The Martian, by Andy Weir, screenplay by Drew Goddard, director Ridley Scott. The film won a Golden Globe, as did Matt Damon, and it was nominated for seven Academy Awards, amongst others.

Ridley Scott did a very good directing job here, even if it did feel as though it was prepping the population of earth for manned missions to Mars being wholeheartedly endorsed by NASA, and somehow smacking of some sort of propaganda, although I’m not sure exactly what!

Wow – this guy could McGyver anything! You’d definitely want to have those truly awesome skills if your fellow crewmembers left you for dead on an airless, waterless and generally hostile planet with minimal supplies for survival and no way home.

Matt Damon was a great choice of actor for the stranded astronaut, Mark Watney, and despite not being in any way qualified to judge, it seemed to me quite believable in terms of the technical side of things, with a few weighty exceptions! However, it’s all good in the name of art! Apparently, there was extensive research done at their facilities, and with the full co-operation of NASA.

I think what was most appealing is that the lead wasn’t overly dramatized although it could’ve easily been played that way, whereas our hero was given a very definite sense of humour; and although the tension amongst those earthbound was obvious – it also wasn’t OTT. One of the running jokes in the movie is the commander’s awful taste in music – seventies disco, and the only music poor MW has access to for the duration of his 550 ‘sol’ stay on the red planet.

An enjoyable and inevitable watch, considering all the celestial activity of late! I recommend.

“Crossing Mars” from the soundtrack which was scored by Harry Gregson-Williams

"bag of bones"

Amazon synopsis:

One of Stephen King's more literary ghost stories gets a largely faithful small-screen translation in this effective story about things bumping in the night. Set, like many of King's later works, in a small Maine town with secrets, the plot follows a bestselling writer (Pierce Brosnan) haunted--in every sense of the word--by the death of his wife (Annabeth Gish). Suffering from writer's block, he heads to his family's cabin by the lake, only to get entangled in a supernatural tug of war between a young girl and her supremely scary grandfather (played, in a sly casting move, by kindly sitcom perennial William Schallert). Before long, he realizes that his new home's closets are bursting at the seams with skeletons. Director Mick Garris, an old hand at King adaptations (The Stand, Desperation, the television remake of The Shining), delivers the scary stuff with aplomb, particularly a mountingly creepy dream within a dream within a dream sequence. Unfortunately, he has rather less success depicting the tricky internal thought processes of the main character that gave the novel its distinctive flavor. Still, fans of the author will find much to enjoy here, including Brosnan's central performance, a memorably deranged sound design, and an array of scares that range from creepily subtle to full-tilt in your face. Watch out for that tree

my take on it:

im a huge fan of Stephen King's novels on the whole, but his movie adaptations generally leave a lot to be desired (but I still watch them hoping for something great, which
rarely eventuates, so I expect little from the movie/mini series versions)...Misery, Shawshank Redemption, Delores Clareborne, Green Mile, Thinner, The Shining (remake) being the exceptions!
Pierce Brosnan stars in this one...
it was a two part mini series when on tv some time ago...
too much of the dream/nightmare sequences for my liking
it wasn't until the second half that the movie really got going into the story properly...
but then, even Brosnan couldn't give it the oomph factor it deserved even though he did a sterling job himself...
too much time with bull crap to fill up time for my liking...
I remember loving the novel from the mid 1990s if memory serves me correct, and one of the last good ones until
"revival" only three or so years ago.

my rating: 1.5/5
