Is rap considered music? - Nick - 31-12-2014 Rap in its purest form can't be considered music, that being said, I believe that it is indeed music. You can't say that rap isn't music without disrespecting generations of musicians that worked to make it the industry it is today. You also can't say it's not music without saying that songs like "Subterranean Homesick Blues" and "A Boy Named Sue" (which both layed down the foundations for rap) aren't music. In my opinion, anything with a melody or even a basic beat that means something to the musician or listener is music. Sometimes you can't say what you need to say without expressing it musically (almost a Jim Croce moment there!), so if rap is how someone expresses their self, who are we to judge them? That's not music, that more of noise. Birds singing is musical, but someone yapping over a microphone is not. There's a certain degree of the voice where you can consider the singer singing a pitch.
