Who is your favorite singer-songwriter - Big Ears - 19-11-2014
Laura Nyro's songs were successfully covered by 5th Dimension (Stoned Soul Picnic, Wedding Bell Blues), Barbra Streisand (Stoney End), Cass Elliott (He's a Runner), Three Dog Night, and Peter, Paul and Mary. Laura was a songwriting genius, rather like Carole King, and I think her best album is Eli and the 13th Confession (1968). I am annoyed with myself for not putting her in my list of favourites.

Heckuva cover artist too. ^ Wow! I didn't know she had worked with Manhattan Transfer. I'll definitely have to look into that. Her untimely death was absolutely tragic.

I've looked into it via Google and I think I need to get the Tonin' album.
Despite only a 2-star rating by AMG, it's worth your time and ears. Ironic that the only tune I didn't like is the Beach Boys song--all the rest just sparkle. This one breaks my heart every time I hear it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NR0EucGpDTY << I thought no one but Bobby Darin could do this song justice--I was mistaken. Sam Cooke comes damn close but he doesn't have the lean-in pith, the angst, the tortured soul the others do. His is just a plea; the other 2 are expressing raw need. Been there and I'm still there....

Interesting conversation. One of my favorite Laura Nyro releases is "Smile". It was a Jazz Folk oriented kind of album released in 76'. Although I love all of her work from the 60's, this particular album takes the music to a different level...sort of like how Joni Mitchell changed her approach on The Hissing Of Summer Lawns

^ By AMG, do you mean AllMusic? Sometimes I agree with them and sometimes I definitely do not. I did notice that Laura Nyro only sings on one track and Phil Collins is on the album.

My post was a bit misleading--I should have said it (Tonin') was a compendium, not single-artist. And like yourself, I disagree with the AllMusicGuide sometimes. Even then, the quality of writing is good and even those I disagree with usually have good reasons presented for the value judgments. It's the first place to look, not the only.
