Which decade has better music? - Tiggi - 24-03-2009 Iota Wrote:Maybe the same because someone else would've done what they did. Maybe even better... Disagree. Nothing stopped anyone providing a superior alternative to either band, and even if you don't like either, you'd surely acknowledge that no-one stepped up to the plate ?! Can't agree with Led Zeppelin, probably because of how much I like them really. But I also consider them to be superb musically, all around. I can see how they could be inspiration to all sorts of genres, from single songs alone. Black Sabbath on the other hand, it's possible that someone could have had as much influence as them. Possibly better, but let's leave that one up to opinion. As was said, someone could have "stepped up to the plate", but nobody did. Not to say music's just one big fight for a number one spot! I just say that because it did happen, and because so many influential bands did come out in the 70s, it's the dominant decade. Plenty of what came from there can still be heard today, in most (if not all) genres! .. :blah: I need to learn to shorten my posts. :/ Which decade has better music? - kvincent5555 - 26-03-2009 markyyy Wrote:...so many influential bands did come out in the 70s, it's the dominant decade. Plenty of what came from there can still be heard today, in most (if not all) genres!... I also think there's a Golden Age aspect, as with other kinds of music and art forms, so to speak. Between '65 and '70 rock seemed to be on an accellerated path of growth and innovation. There have been improvements and additions since then, but in general the genre has matured, and there will tend to be diminishing returns. From that perspective, it makes comparing decades not only difficult, but unfair in a sense. There will not likely be another Beatles, Rolling Stones, or Led Zeppelin in the history of rock and roll, just as there will be no more Bachs, Beethovens, etc. in the history of classical. Large breakthroughs are more likely to occur in less mature categories of music, or will require a whole new category of music. Which decade has better music? - trbc08 - 26-03-2009 Using classical as an example in this case is bad, considering that Bach (Johann Sebastian) died twenty years before Beethoven was born. Classical thrived much longer than "contemporary" music has even existed. Which decade has better music? - abrocks22 - 27-03-2009 i think late 80s or early 90s. Shortened the quote so that I didn't take up too much space :biggrin1:. I agree with the Golden Age view, and I think that's simply what makes the decade the "best". I think the greatness of the influence that the 70s held on the decades that followed cannot be denied. I'm judging best by the strength of the influence it had on music. If I were judging by talent, I'd still pick the 70s, but the talent judging really lies in opinion in many cases. Which decade has better music? - kvincent5555 - 29-03-2009 markyyy Wrote:If I were judging by talent, I'd still pick the 70s, but the talent judging really lies in opinion in many cases. Talent is a tough one for me. I don't know if I could pick a decade. I've found that the best music often has little to do with talent. Some artists just seem to stumble upon a great and unique sound, and they themselves don't seem to have much control over it. Stanley Jordan can play 3 guitars blindfolded with no hands, and make it sound like an orchestra of guitars playing a heavenly chorus, but once I've seen his show once, I think I'd rather go listen to Iggy and the Stooges or MC5. mile:
Which decade has better music? - JonG - 29-03-2009 I think a reason the poll might not favor the decades the above posters think most worthy is this: a lot of people voted with their favorite not what they think is the best. At least I know I did. I admit that the most influential, important, talented, etc popular music mostly came out of the 60's and 70's. I just don't have the same emotional response to that music as I do to some music from the 80's. There are those that evaluate music from an mental/academic standpoint first, and those that go for the emotional/physical reaction. Which decade has better music? - Conrad - 09-04-2009 I've said 90's, i loved the whole punk rock scene from blink-182, the offspring and green day, it was truly epic. Nowadays music is good yeah, but just doesn't have the same edge |
